Just wanted to feel like I'm not alone. I knew I wasn't when he was diagnosed with just ADHD, but to add ASD, I am freaking out right now. Guest guest Posted March 8, 2006 Report Share Posted March 8, 2006 Glenna, the FBA should be completed within 30 days of the original request. If a behavior plan hasn't been completed and implemented, you may want to file a state complaint. I know that this could have serious repercussions for you because you work in the district. You could call and see if there is a state liasion that you could talk to about the situation before you proceed or contact your local parent information network for advice. The administration has tried to give him a break because of his ASD. Anyway, yesterday he had a fight in his Algebra class.( yes, he is 12, in the 7th grade, and taking Algebra) A girl had her books on his desk, he asked whose they were, an 8th grade girl removed them, he made a remark, she said " shut up " . He then burped in her face. She hit him, he hit her back, her twin brother decided to join in the ordeal. I freaked out when I found out who the boy and girl were. I had them in 6th grade. They are Honor Roll kids and never get into trouble. I got real upset, but not at Micah as much as the head of the sp.ed. department. She asked the Autisim specialist not to come back. That she could handle the observations of my son. She then made up all kinds of excuses for not having the observations and the FBA, and Behavior plan in place. I understand that she has several schools, but this is my child, the one I am concerned with. In surrounding counties, my son would have his own aide. That is not how things work in this county. I teach here, and I see what the options are for him. I am trying to document , I just don't feel that the school board is doing their part. I need advice. I think I know what needs to be done, but I want to hear from an outside person. And obviously, due to a fight like that, he needs an aide to prevent further problems. If they don't care about protecting him, they should care about protecting the other kids he might burp at in the future. lol. Sorry but I can picture this happening and I don't get why a burp allows them to beat him up. He obviously just didn't know how to handle a stressful situation. As to questioning his placement, I can't believe sometimes how people freak out at the first problem like this. He needs help learning social rules and an aide could help cue him while they also provide social skill training by the couselor or ST. I would also write a follow up letter to disagree about pulling the autism specialist. Request her return immediately to help develop an appropriate behavior plan. It amazes me how some people in the education system are okay with being ignorant about things, and remaining that way. I was always told that if I did not know or understand something, I should do the research and reading until I did. When we had a similar instance, our school had the autism teacher come in and teach the whole classroom about neurological differences from the book The Sixth Sense by Carol Gray. It really helped everyone to understand how my son and others see things, think, and feel. Don't let them put this solely on your child's shoulders.
