Hi all,

Just joined today, and it occured to me that I should probably tell a

little about myself and my son. My name is Tena, and I'am a single

mother of a 16 year old son who was diagnosed with Asperger's in

kindergarten. Which was about a year after the diagnosis was

officially recognized by the DSM-IV. Knowing what I know now however,

the signs were there as early as 23 months. He wasn't talking. I

attributed that to his prematurity (he was a 24 weeker). He had an

excellent pediatrician who planned to follow it closely, and we had a

follow appointment three months afterward. But I'd lost my job, thus

my health insurance, which delayed the diagnosis for another 3 years or

so. He was in special education (a language disorder class), until the

third grade until he tested out. He now goes to school online here in

Vegas which is working very well for him. Sorry, didn't mean to talk

so much.

Teena,

My daughter was also a preemie, a 28weeker (now almost 3). Her

docter and speech therapist also thought her symptoms were due to

preematurity; however, this last month they have both brought up

Atisitic Spectrum Disorder and/or Asperger Syndrome. She is being

evaluated by another speech therapist next week, and by Early

education mid April.

After all that I have been reading I am sure their prelimanary

diagnosis is correct, as so many things that I found odd or

frustrating I see as normal for this type of disorder.

Welcome Tena!

For anyone else without health insurance- each state has a federally-

funded program for disabled kids, where they can get free or low cost

insurance. is on it. And it covers a lot more for Aspie

kids than regular insurance does.

Also, each county has a federally-funded program to give evaluations

and therapies and preschool to all kids with any types of delays for

free.

My son started in sixth grade as well. Would have started him sooner had we

moved to Vegas sooner.

Has it been a positive experience for him and you? Much more less stress? Is

he more willing to do the work/homework?

It's been very positive. When he was in th seventh grade, we had moved back to

California, and he was in a traditional middle school. Worse mistake, I ever

made. He was so distracted, I was at school at least once a week for one reason

or another. This was the primary reason we moved back to Nevada so he could

retrun to Odyssey (the name of the school). He is very self motivated when he

isn't distracted by all of the chaos of a traditional school. The only thing

that I have to do is check on him every once and awhile. Another good thing

about doing this in Vegas is that as you know, this is a 24 hour town. So it is

very easy to find a job that has swing, and/or graveyard shifts so that you can

keep your days open.
