I am having social and obessive problems with my 8yr old son. All he

does is plays with either transformers or his Nintendo DS. He will

very seldom interact with other childern even his own brother. He has

take a transformer every where he goes and all he does is talks about

all the different transformers. Im having problems with his acting

mature in school. He is going into third grade but he isnt acting like

he will be in third grade. Does anyone else have the same problems and

if so can you please give me some advice.

Thanks

The problems you are having are so common in asperger's. Have you

tried social stories with him? They help here a lot with my daughter.

I'm sure people here will have much better advice, but I really find

social stories work for my daughter best.

Good Luck!

You bet others are going through this. Exactly the same........classic

aspergers!!!

Isn't it a great ride? Hee hee.

I'm sorry,,,,,I've been up all night with a chilc who got his tonsils out a

few days ago. I'm a little loopy.

I think you just have to attemp to get them to try other things.........but

understand that this stuff they do is comforting to them.

Hi Marcy. Although this may be typcial behavior, I think there are

things you can do to help your son. The first might be social skills

groups. Ask a reputable psychologist in your area to help you find a

group. These groups can really help your son learn how to interact

appropriately. Another thing would be to look at your son and his

class/school. Is there a reason he is withdrawing? Is he

withdrawing more? Is he bored? Are kids teasing him? Is the school

a good fit for him? We have an 8 year old son who is in 2nd grade.

He repeated K because he was not ready socially/emotionally to move

on. This has been great because his maturity is at least a little

closer to his peers now. With some AS kids, you really have to

figure out how to engage them. My concern would be he will slip more

and more into his own world unless you start working with him. He

could also have anxiety which could interfer with him getting along

with others (my son has tremendous issues with anxiety). Best of

luck to you,

Try doing things that require him to not have the ds attached to him. I know,

easier said than done. My own 10 yo has his in a little backpack for easier

travel. <g> Also, practice having conversations - usually a good speech

therapist can help design programs to practice turn taking, staying on topic,

etc. There is a nice book called, " Super Skills " that has a nice list of social

skills that our kids tend to be weak in, then activities to do to improve those

skills.

The immaturity is part of the package. I wouldn't stop trying to work on it,

but also don't get too upset that he is immature.
