Guest guest
Thanks for all the awesome ideas! I have made a list and when I can get up and about I plan on getting some of these things :-) I also read in a parents magazine to turn a colander over and have your child put uncooked spaghetti noodles through the holes...hmmm...may try that too! - C. Guest guest
We have this issue too. Lucas sees a OT 1 time weekly. Have you had your child tested for dysgraphia? The OT told us that it is pretty common with our AS kids. We just play games and work on the fine moter skills and then we work on making the top and bottom lines on his paper larger and different colors. This helps him see where the lines are and where his letters should be. It can be a long painful process to write, but there has been some improvment. Also the type of pen and grip are really important due to the sensory issues. Hope this helps! > > > > Do 3 years olds write? > > > > Roxanna > > ( ) If they cant do it right...... > > > > > > I have a question...Does anyone else have issues with their child > not even trying something because they " know " they cant do it right? > > > > a is 3.5 yo and will not even pretend to write because " I cant > do it " I have finally figured it out that she doesn't want to pretend > to write...because she knows that's not correct. Guest guest
, I have bought some at Fred Meyers, Target, and at Joanne's Craft store (I've got quite a few as she likes them so much). You can also buy them on Amazon.com. Guest guest
I guess I worded that wrong. I should have said, Do 3 year olds have to be able to write developmentally. I don't think so. Before we get upset that our kids are not doing something, we should check to see if it's developmentally appropriate for their age. Guest guest
I wasn't asking about doodling or coloring. I was discussing 3 yo's who write. Roxanna ( ) If they cant do it right...... Guest guest
It was fun! It wasn't quite what I had planned, but we had fun anyway lol We didn't have spaghetti noodles and they didn't want to play cards so we watched a movie. Cory fell asleep about a quarter of the way through and before it was half over, Trey went back upstairs to watch the Discovery channel lol h and I finished watching it though and they all said they had a good night so it was good lol Thank you for asking! =) -Jenn, AEP (ADD, Bi-Polar, Anxiety/Depression) Proud Momma of Cory Albert (14yrs ADHD), h Dawn (12yrs Anxiety/Depression) and Jerry Lee " Trey " (9yrs ADHD, Bi-Polar, Asperger's) -- Re: ( ) If they cant do it right...... Guest guest
No, I don't think writing is a milestone at that age by any means! However, they did test my son to be able to write a cross and trace lines.... so maybe that is?! I am unsure, but WRITING - no way. My NT kid couldn't do it until age 5. Guest guest
My son is also 3 and they want him to be able to draw a straight line up and down, Circle, and a Criss Cross. He is in EELP and at the beginning of the school year he couldn't do any of them. Now he is doing all of it. Not perfect mind you but he is doing it on his own now. Besides it doesn't say anywhere where children need to be budding artists. My little one will be 4 in August so that may help you. I also received from the school system the Pre-k and Kindergarten requirements. They are pretty basic but I know we have 2 other play dates around austin's age and these 2 other children at the age of 3 that are considered normal Well, Austin is ahead of them on some things and with Asperger's so honestly I know getting him into public school full time has just helped him emensely. It's not for everyone and every child but they also have children in the class that are moderately Autistic and it has helped them as well. But I know I compare Austin to other children and honestly normal children go through allot of the same things. Some parents are just to embarassed to admit it. So if you think your child is way behind chances are you are like me and tend to lean toward is every little thing austin experiences due to Aspergers. The answer is no it's typical 3 year old behavior. Ada Roxanna <madideas@...> wrote: I guess I worded that wrong. I should have said, Do 3 year olds have to be able to write developmentally. Guest guest
Okay...Yes a is only 3.5 yo but... She will not/can not draw, color, doodle or scribble. Yes she can make a circle shape (sort of) and the " cross or x " shape to pass the " tests " but beyond that... I wasn't meaning to say I think she has to write correctly right now....I just want to encourage her and head off any problems before they come up. I did get the hand writing with out tears stuff in the mails and will be starting that with her, but it is really neat and starts off with just dots and lines :-) I have gotten a lot of great idea from all of you..Thanks! - C. Guest guest
Oh. I guess I read it wrong because I thought you were upset that she isn't writing her alphabet letters yet. You can introduce coloring and writing " skills " in a variety of ways. Kids often like things like magna doodles. Or the new play mats that you write on with water pens - very cool. They also have that paper that turns all sorts of colors when you draw on it. It pays to be a kid these days. I would make easy little mazes or buy some - those are fun too. You can also figure out ways to play with dough - they have those kits now where you stick a wad of play dough in the machine and out comes shapes or hair on a doll. I would also concentrate on being silly. Also spend time making mistakes and talking about it outloud as well as reading some social stories about making mistakes. I have kids like this as well as I grew up being that way. So I even talk to myself and say, " Hey, nobody is perfect! " So I tend to say it so the kids can hear it and know that it's ok to make mistakes. I would make this part of the day, every day. And if she hates it, find ways to make it as fun as possible and reward her after for working at it. I work with a little guy who is not into writing just because his fine motor is awful and he has no desire either - so it's always hard to work on fine motor with him, even fun things! After a while though, he gets used to the idea and eventually starts doing it. He is working on assembling a 4 piece puzzle right now. It's a struggle for him and he has no interest. So I praise a lot, reward a lot, make jokes and giggles throughout to try and make it fun as possible. he may never grow up and want to do fine motor stuff as a general rule - but he will be able to do the minimum and that is important. Roxanna ( ) If they cant do it right...... I have a question...Does anyone else have issues with their child not even trying something because they " know " they cant do it right? a is 3.5 yo and will not even pretend to write because " I cant do it " I have finally figured it out that she doesn't want to pretend to write...because she knows that's not correct. We working on learning how to write, but with a child that doesn't like to color and has weak hands...its difficult. But the same is true for other things..unless she " knows " she can do it correctly she wont try. She will not try to draw a square because her lines aren't perfect.
