My son who is now 13 is the same way. he hated to try anything and

would say he can not do it.

I found that letting him try when no ones else is around works best

for him.

Good luck. Writing is definetly the worst! I know my son hated to

color! he would get into trouble all the time at school because he

refused to color. Finally I had them put it into his IEp that he did

not have to color. At home he would have a melt down if he had to

color or draw. It would take hours to get him to do the most basic

thing.

Good luck,

Dee

My NT daughter was this way more than my son with AS, although he

has gotten more perfectionistic as he has gotten older. (Actually a

good thing) My dd wouldn't walk until she had all the pieces put

together. Then one day, she just stood up and walked from one end of

the house to thte other. No falling. She was 17 months old. Go figure.

Oh, yes. My son was this way from when he was very little. Now, he has times

when he is

much more easy going, but there were days I hid the blocks when he was one

because he

couldn't handle a tower falling over and I was too tired to handle his

frustration.

She has access to all of her things...creative & toys ect. Yet if we don't

introduce them into a situation...she will never instigate. I guess I could lay

them out and encourage her and leave the room...hmmmm...thanks for the insight

Kids are all different. My son with aspergers always doodled/wrote, etc.

Another " typical " daughter wrote all the time, too. One of my sons (typical)

scared the crap out of me because he could have cared a less if he even knew the

letters of the alphabet in kindergarten!!!!! He's now in first and with a lot

of help, he's now doing it!!!

We all work at our own pace.

I think as long as you have paper, pencils, colors, artsy stuff around and ask

her to try,,,,,some day she will!!! Maybe you could ask her and if she says

no,,,,,you go ahead and color/draw (whatever). Maybe make it look like you're

loving it!! Maybe she'll be interested and give it a shot, too?

Hi ,

Our daughter had this problem at 2.5 years of age and what we did was to get

her those crayola coloring books and you can't screw those up. You can use the

markers that come with the book and they are basically invisible until used on

the special paper and then the color comes out as you go over the picture.

Our daughter now colors on regular paper. These books were a good start for

us and it is at least worth a try.

Hope this helps.

My son had little interest in writing/drawing/colouring skills either

when he was little. We didn't realize until a bit later that he had a

fine motor skill delay. At the age of 4 he was eligible due to speech

delay to enter into a 2-year kindergarten program with an aide and

she was very good at encouraging him: We all knew his passion for

cars so they would paint cars, use a pencil to follow a road on paper

(pretending the pencil was driving), and often use an upright writing

surface - such as a whiteboard/chalkboard - because it is easier to

manipulate writing utensils at an angle. The theme was always cars or

something related because that was what he loved. We also used the

cartoony paint books that you only had to add water to in order for

the picture to appear. EASE of outcome and INTEREST seemed to be the

key to success.

Funny thing is she knows all her letters and the sounds they make. She can

sound out words and loves to spell out words you say on the refrigerator with

the magnetic letters. I think the next step would be writing...that's where we

are stuck! Maybe I am wrong in thinking its the next step but when she will not

try any of it gets frustrating and a bit worrisome, that this could be the

beginning of a bigger issue.

We did order the Handwriting with out tears program but it has yet to arrive.

Thanks for the insight guys....more is always welcome :-)

Hi

I can so relate to your post !

My son Adam is 4 and he too has issues with writing and drawing. Infact he

just hates it so much. He has some sensory problems and is having OT at the

moment and we are doing a sensory diet with him at home which is working well.

He has some fine motor issues also and has just now started to use his right

hand instead of both of them. The OT says that this is probably why in his case

that he doesn't like to draw as he will dig the pencil or crayons into the paper

and tend to hold them with a fisted grip rather than a tripod grasp.

My son also knows his letters and sounds and his preschool teacher says he is

top of the class when it comes to phonics, letters and numbers.

We don't yet have a diagnosis for our son but his psychologist thinks he may

have aspergers and a language disorder.

Have her do all sorts of things that use the pincer grasp. Play pik

up stix, count beans from one container to another, pick up cotton

balls with tweezers, give dolly a bath with a q-tip or a cotton ball.

The next step isn't really writing. Learning letters is cerebral.

Writing is mechanical, and you need to train the muscles in order to

do that. Our kids, in particular often have a tough time with that. I

know mine still does.

Oh, and I remember a couple more things our O/T encouraged for

increasing strength: Kitchen tongs (I remember someone mentioning

that their little one in our group was hooked on these... maybe this

is how he/she grew fond of this utencil?? lol) The game, " Operation "

and using monkey bars (another upper body strengthening tool) but

watch out for blisters to arise on the hands!

Light bright and using playdough to strengthen muscles too! You have some

great ideas!!

Ker plunk too.. And painting on an easel uses the shoulder muscles too!

I bought Wonder Wow books and Aquadoodle Mini-Mats for for Bethany, and

she loves them (no worries about markers in other books either as it

just uses water). Each page can be used again and again. My daughter

cannot get enough of them!

I'm no expert, but my son's occupational therapist is of the

opinion that writing shouldn't be taught before age five.

I don't remember her explanation, but can ask about it if

anyone's curious.

>>>I also read in a parents magazine to turn a colander over and have your

child put uncooked spaghetti noodles through the holes...hmmm...may try that

too!<<<

That sounds like fun! We're having a " kids night " tonight because DH is out

of town for work until tomorrow night so we always watch a movie and play

games and have snack time ~gasp~ in the living room! lol

I wonder if I have any spaghetti noodles, that'd be a fun thing to do and we

can make it into a game. Thanks for the idea!

We too do Sensory OT and such!

My mother has started a children's book of the month club for a since she

LOVES books :-) this month while going through the booklets I saw the ball

shaped crayons (I had been looking for a good deal on them) It was a set of 24

for $12.99! Hopefully that will help her with the tripod grip....She doesn't

seem to have much strength and can not mark the paper well....we'll see if these

work.

a also had to have all the crayons peeled...a sensory thing we think :-)
