Guest guest
, Only have a moment and have been trying to read thru a few of the recent posts. I'm so sorry you and your son are going through this! I would contact the Office of Civil Rights and file a complaint or at least talk to someone about the situation. You can always just file the complaint online and at least they WILL have to investigate it, which will put the school at a disadvantage there anyway. Though I feel sure you'd win the complaint. Your son is obviously being picked on (more than that with the fight) because of his disability, his differences are due to that (i.e., the others wouldn't be doing it if he were " typical " /not AS). Here's a couple links to help you: http://www.ed.gov/PressReleases/07-2000/0726_2.html http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/success-disability.html http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/504faq.html Keep us updated on how things go!! Your son has a right to feel safe at school, and they obviously haven't willingly met his needs over the years. On that 2nd link above, lower on the page it has - for anyone here dealing with a high IQ child: " School Discounted Student's Disability Because I.Q. Was So High: A fifth-grade student with Aperger's Syndrome - a form of autism often accompanied by a high I.Q. - was denied a free and appropriate education because his school district did not believe it had a legal obligation to serve him due to his high intelligence. As a result of the OCR's actions, the district provided the student with the education, services and aids he requires based on his needs. This case also served to alert the OCR to potential future problems in this school district. As a result of the agency's work, the district agreed to identify and locate every qualified student with a disability who was not receiving a public education, and inform them and their parents of the district's obligations under Section 504.
