Guest guest
Darned if I know. It's a mystery to me. But this is a sister talking. Meow. Not at my college. No way. I got away with other bad habits but never bad spelling. The only thing I can come up with is that she had a computer by then (I didn't; they weren't out yet) and probably used Spellcheck with some degree of accuracy. One of my favorite stories about my stepsister is about when she was taking calculus in high school. She went to the same one I attended only 8 years behind me. She would stare at an equation and without consciously working it would know the answer. The teacher would call on her, and she would just blurt it out, and it would be right every time. The teacher would ask her to work the problem, and my stepsister would respond, " I don't know how I know the answer. I just do. " Scary. T. Guest guest
Tina in California, Did you have any luck getting services with the Regional Center? For an Asperger's diagnosis? We tried, back when was in just terrible shape, and we couldn't leave him alone for more than 3 minutes at a time, and they turned us down. I couldn't believe it. I may try again, but I hear that they're not taking AS kids now. Liz On Apr 18, 2005, at 10:06 AM, Tina Cruz wrote: > > > On Apr 14, 2005, at 6:18 AM, tina woodby wrote: > >> Hi! The cutoff here was 6, and I pursued it just after he turned. They wouldn't budge, so I had to go through other avenues. We have what is called ForOCKids here, and they are great, but again, my son was just too old, they said. I agree, they are not that helpful. They weren't that helpful with my daughter's preemieness, either. They said she had mild hypotonia, but not enough to actually need services. They gave me a hand out so I could do the exercises with her. She hated them. Still does. I know we will probably need to reevaluate and have her take some OT for a while...but she seems to be doing well now, so that keeps getting bumped off the list. Guest guest
Liz, We didn't have any luck, either. The social worker came out and saw Sasha reading from a book, out loud, quite fluently, when he was not yet six, and he said to me, " Not on your life. Ain't gonna happen. " Well, perhaps he was a bit more articulate than that, but that's what I heard. Ninety days later I received a letter that said that Sasha shows no sign of mental retardation is therefore ineligible. I called back after the AS diagnosis came in, and the new social worker politely warned me, " Well, it's your time, but I can tell you it's unlikely. " I'm sorry they were such boneheads with you and . Yes, Sasha's psychotherapist asked his associates and was told that kids with AS and HFA are summarily refused services at this time. So sad. Have you heard of the Southern California autism online support group? It's autisminterventionsocal at . A bunch of those parents are attorneys and some members publish all over the place. I wonder if they have found a way around this. These parents are also well connected, and they are helping me make contact with people in my community. There are a bunch of people in San Diego. They have links to lists of attorneys, schools, advocates, doctors, etc. T. mom of Sasha, 7 At 10:59 PM 4/18/2005 -0700, you wrote: > > Tina in California, > > > > Did you have any luck getting services with the Regional Center? Guest guest
Thanks, , I'll check into it. We get fairly good cooperation from 's school and the school district right now. What I was hoping for from the Regional Center was help with transitioning after high school. If your kid has got the right diagnosis, the Regional Center'll provide a student housemate to help structure his day, set out his meds, go over his plans for the day, help him cook dinner, etc. I'll check with these other people and see what they know. Thanks for the resource! Liz On Apr 19, 2005, at 9:29 AM, Tombrello wrote: > > Liz, > > We didn't have any luck, either.
