Guest guest
By way of background, my son Henry is 4 1/2, dx High Functioning Autism, with low muscle tone, early speech then no speech for 2 years, then slowly starting to speak. Has had PT since 9 months, OT since age 2, and just started speech after getting his dx. I've always suspected that his issues could be dietary or environmental, because every so often there are days when he's just totally 'on' - pays attention, speaks clearly when spoken to, seems more physically coordinated, stops obsessing with and videos, etc. I started him with 1/2 Peptizyde on Sat., then a whole one Sunday and yesterday. Also started probiotics to get rid of any yeast/bacteria issues in his stomach, and have been giving him epsom salt baths for a week (thank you Dana!). So far, Henry seems to be right on schedule for the 'side effects' that they are describing On the negative side, he wet his bed last night (first time in a long time) and seems to cry easily for emotional reasons (which actually is good, I think - he'll learn to modulate that). On the positive side, he is becoming much more aware of his surroundings - last night on the way home he rolled his window down to try and engage other people in cars in conversation! Before I don't think he ever noticed anything other than stop lights, signs, and whether there were blue cars in front of red cars (hubby has a red car, mine is blue, and blue is ALWAYS supposed to be in front, if you know what I mean). Finally, this morning, instead of fighting through every step of the getting ready for school process, he got his clothes out BY HIMSELF, brought them in to our room to have a chat (?!?!) while he was dressing, and was just a total chatterbox! Conversations going back and forth and on and on! Unbelievable! We went outside to eat breakfast on the deck, and he said " why is it all wet out here? " (a WHY question!!) When I told him it was dew, he asked " is that like rain? " (another question!! in a circle of conversation!!! and appropriate!!!!) I said no, it was condensation, and he said, " Hmm, condensation, that's a funny word. " And kept on chattering. I stopped talking, but my mouth was wide open - I've rarely seen him that in tune with what's going on around him, and I don't think I've ever had that long of a conversation with him unless I've forced him to answer yes/no questions. He was actually excited to go to school - first time ever - and talked about things he might do when he got there. Since I'm only giving him one enzyme (at a meal when we usually have little to no milk or wheat), is it possible that the enzymes are doing this? Or is it more likely the Epsom salts and probiotics? Since he always had very loose stools, I used to load him up with apples and bananas, which I cut out when Dana mentioned the phenol/Epsom salt connection. His stools seem a little better already - lighter, but better formed with less food in them. (We used to joke with Henry to get him to eat different foods - if we wanted him to eat blueberries, we told him his poops would be blue, carrots were orange, etc. - it usually worked! He's going to be so disappointed... : ) Thanks again for all the support and EXCELLENT information. I feel like after 4 years of having doctors tell me that he'll grow out of it, and therapists telling me that he'll never grow out of it, I've finally been given the proper information!!
