Guest guest
My son seems to want to eat nothing but crisps and lots and lots of them I think its the salt he is craving, can anything be given to reduce this craving, am worried as the health implications of so much salt. It might be the texture he is after. You could try giving him other crunchy things to see if that satisfies him. Potatoes feed yeast so that might be part of the craving too. IME the only way to stop a craving is to cut the food out entirely. (I miss those chips!) Nell
Guest guest
Hi, Salt craving can indicate adrenal problems. There's lots of info if you Google for it.

Guest guest
He needs adrenal support. Craving salt is caused by salt wasting, due to low adrenal function. When the adrenals are low sometimes a hormone called aldosterone can be low, and this will cause you to urinate out most of your salt...thus you crave it and you feel dehydrated despite drinking. We let the kids use as much sea salt as they want. I put it in my water to counter this salt wasting effect of my poor adrenal function. It's fine for him to do this, it won't hurt him, I have never seen a kid eat more of it than they needed because if it tastes badly to you, then your body does not need salt. If it tastes good...you need it. For example when I put a pinch in my water bottle, I can't taste it at all. But if my dh takes a drink from it, he shrieks back and yells..gross! Salt water!. At times when my kids need it, they cannot taste it in the water either. When they don't need it, they react loudly about the salty water and ask for plain water. We salt to taste, but this does not apply to table salt. Table salt is bad for the body. > > > > Does anyone know what would cause my son to eat salt? Guest guest
Adrenal explaination sounds likely. I had one other thought, though. Table salt contains dextrose (from corn). Before we realized my son was corn intolerant, he would crave salt and " drink " it right out of the shakers (he would even try to do it at restaurants--yuck)! Now that we have removed corn from his diet, we only have sea salt or kosher salt in the house that does not contain the dextrose. He doesn't crave the no-dextrose salts. > > > > > > Does anyone know what would cause my son to eat salt? Yesterday he went to the pantry to get a snack, and got a pinch of sea salt.
