It tastes so much better to me than stevia. I've been experimenting with xylitol after my dentist said it starves bacteria in the mouth and thus prevents cavities, as well as ear infections. So far so good, it doesn't seem to aggravate yeast. Nell
Guest guest
Theresa, While Xylitol is not recommended on SCD, both Stevia and xylitol are recommended on yeast free diets. If you like xylitol better then go for it. Xylitol also has many benefits. It is one of bacteria’s natural enemies. Xylitol is also effective in FIGHTING yeast infections in the mouth and nasal passage and preventing ear infections. It is also thought to be a precursor to certain antioxidants. It inhibits dental cavities by reducing plaque to protect the enamel. In fact, it promotes the remineralization of the enamel by binding with calcium. The antibacterial properties of xylitol help reduce gum disease and mouth infections. Studies have consistently shown that chewing xylitol gum regularly promotes an alkaline environment in which the damaging and acidic bacteria responsible for tooth decay cannot survive. And yes, it is used spoon for spoon like sugar. Guest guest
I found a stevia that is a blend we really like. It is mixed with lactose and the combination of the two makes it less bitter and easier to manage. (The ratio is 1/3 that of sugar.) I find it at a place called Trader Joes, but you can also buy it on line at: http://cvc4health.com/stevia2.html Good luck, Kari Off Topic: Xylitol - Is it okay for a yeast-free diet? I know stevia is okay for a yeast-free diet but we haven't been able to find a brand/form that we like. Is xylitol okay as far as not feeding yeast? It tastes so much better to me than stevia. Also, I understand that xylitol has a one to one ratio with sugar, i.e. 1 teaspoon xylitol equals 1 teaspoon sugar as opposed to stevia which is I think 200 times sweeter than sugar and hard to bake with. Is this correct? Thanks, Theresa
