Guest guest
, A few weeks ago I had posted a question asking if leaky gut and malabsorption were the same thing and you responded back with some questions. I wrote back that I would check with our Pfeiffer nurse and here are her answers. Also, as a reminder my son's test results from Pfeiffer read " malabsorption " and " copper/zinc imbalance. " I asked what type of test Pfeiffer did originally on my son to determine that he has malabsorption. (I know we did not do an intestinal permeability test.) I asked if the test involved just looking for nutrients in the body to determine malabsorption. I asked if he was malabsorbing all nutrients or just some nutrients and if so, which nutrients. I asked if we just assume he has leaky gut because of the malabsorption because his results never stated " leaky gut " . Her response was that they suspect malabsorption because of the yeast and negative bacteria findings in his GI tract. She said " leaky gut " is not a diagnosis but rather a symptom of poor dysbiosis or normal blance of gut flora (I think she meant abnormal) that can cause poor absorption and leaking in the GI tract. They suspect that he has poor absorption in all areas, not just specific areas. (I still wonder why he's big for his age, though; not abnormally big, but always in the 90-95th percentile for his age.) Also, you had asked me what type of yeast treatment he is following. He is taking one capsule each of ProBio Gold (with breakfast) and Culturelle (at bedtime) every day. He just finished up a 14 day course of Diflucan. He is now taking 1 capsule of Yeast Aid twice per day for the next 14 days. Then he stops the Yeast Aid and goes back on Diflucan for 14 days. Then he stops the Diflucan and goes back to the same dose of Yeast Aid for 6 weeks. Then he will only be taking 1 capsule of Yeast Aid per day until our retest for yeast and bacteria come back. And all this time he is of course continuing to take the ProBio Gold and Culturelle every day plus follow his low sugar diet. And of course, we are using AFP Peptizyde and Zyme Prime at every meal, including snacks. Whew!! Sorry, that was a mouthful! Finally, we only did one urine peptide test at 20 months of age. He tested high for casein but not for gluten. I always thought this meant he has leaky gut but now I'm not sure. He has been casein free for almost 3 years now. Pfeiffer said there was no need to repeat the peptide test when we started with them when my son was 3 1/2 years old (last year), that they use the same lab we had used with our DAN! doctor when he was 20 months old, and the results were probably accurate. Where I think I was going with all this originally was " To treat malabsorption as thoroughly as possible, I should be using enzymes before snacks as well, correct? " Also, I'm pretty sure he does not have a problem with phenols, never any giggling or hyperactivity after consuming fruits, etc. However, I'm not sure if the No-Fenol would help with salicylates, which I'm not sure are even a problem but am trying to cover all my bases here. If I don't suspect a phenol problem, how would you use the No-Fenol, to treat the yeast or do a trial run with foods to see if there is in fact a phenol or salicylate sensitivity that I'm not even aware of? I know the the No-Fenol is only effective for yeast when taken on its own, away from food, correct? Finally, last question, I promise...if I give AFP Peptizyde with a snack in addition to Zyme Prime but the snack contains only carbs, say carrots for instance, does the AFP Peptizyde then go after yeast, like No-Fenol, since it has no food in the stomach to work on? Or does this only happen on an empty stomach? In other words, is there any benefit to using AFP Peptizyde or Zyme Prime with a meal that does not contain the food that it acts on? I've been giving him both enzymes with every meal but am wondering if I shouldn't be or if it's even doing anything if that food is not present. Thank you so much for your time. I really appreciate all your help. Theresa
