Guest guest
My sons school has a head lice issue. And, as luck with have it, my son came home with it today. Can anyone recommend a way to address it without using the pesticide shampoo?
Guest guest
My daughter's whole class got lice and this was how it was eradicated. Messy and smelly but very effective and non-toxic: Saturate hair completely with mayonnaise, Best Real Mayonnaise and work the mayonnaise in the hair and roots well. Wrap hair as tightly as possible with plastic wrap, then wrap with a towel. Allow to remain on head for two hours to guarantee all the lice are dead. Wash all pillow cases, towels, blankets, sheets and clothes that have come into contact with any lice-infested hair in the hottest water possible. Shampoo hair thoroughly, and rinse with white vinegar and then rinse clean with water. That's it! On May 18, 2005, at 4:23 AM, suzannenys wrote: > My sons school has a head lice issue. Guest guest
Oh honey, been there done that and never want to go through it again. Good news, boys are usually easier than girls. I did use the pesticide stuff but also used mayo on the hair. However, can you give your son a buzz cut. That would probably take care of it the quickest way. Also make sure you wash all bedding, towels etc. and put all toys espicially stuffed animals in a large plastic trash bag for several days (life cycle, incubation period, don't remember how long it is though). You need to wash every day and or treat and or quarantine the things your child comes in contact. So if he does not have stuffed animals in bed with him then you wouldn't need to treat them and so on. Hopefully, you can nip this in the bud right away otherwise I hate to say it but you will learn the true meaning of the words " nit picking " ! Guest guest
i've heard about using mayo too, with a shower cap placed over the head after the mayo is applied. apparently, the mayo suffocates the lice. also, i've heard of people soaking their heads with vinigar, several times. a dip in the dead sea kills em too, but i suspect you won't be flying to israel in the near future unless you are one of the 50,000 US supporters coming in the next few weeks! incubation should be 7 days. also put stuff in the freezer for a few days to kill lice and eggs. harvard has a good lice website. most important, boil the bedding, etc. michelle Jackie <jdavis5122@...> wrote: Oh honey, been there done that and never want to go through it again. Guest guest
We've just dealt with this for the first time a few weeks ago, I googled head lice because I didn't even know what they looked like, just knew I had a terrible itch, I read this site: http://www.headlice.org/ esp. Jessies story and I went out and bought a comb. I had head lice, only very small ones, and when my son came home I combed his head and he was totally infested, he had the Mommas and the Poppas! I decided I would give combing a go before shaving his head sinc ehe has beautiful hair and even though I felt like it was going nowhere for 4-5 days but a week they had gone and I just got a few extra eggs out over the next few days. And I've combed once a week or so since then and he has nothing, combing works, no mess, no chemicals, no side effects. I washed our linen every couple of days, not boiling, and changed the pillow slips each day for the first few days, then once I could see a difference in combing I didn't worry too much about the linen. Guest guest
My first thought is Tea Tree Oil www.BlueMountainBotanicals.com OT - Head Lice HELP!!!! Does anyone here know of an effective, non-chemical way to get rid of head lice? My poor dolly had them mid-December and after 4 or 5 applications of lice shampoo she only had a few eggs left. That was about 1.5-2 weeks worth of picking eggs from her head. Well guess what, she's got it again now! I spoke to the school nurse today & she said it's been pretty prevalent in the school this year. Um, hello? Why are the parents not being informed to keep an eye out for this? Ah, but that's another story. LOL! Anyway, I've done bunches of research on the net & now I'm coming to all of you. Is there any combo of essential oils and carrier oils that you know of that will get rid of these bugs? Luckily she takes it all in stride. She knows there are " bugs " living in her head & doesn't seem to care. Everyone else in the house keeps their distance from her and is all squimish! Thanks everyone!!! I put 10 drops of tea tree oil in about 2 oz. vegetable oil and smothered his head with it. He slept with it one night before we washed it out by putting shampoo straight on his hair and massaging it in before wetting it. Shampoo twice, adding a drop or 2 of tea tree to the shampoo, if you wish. Comb out the nits, wash anything you can in the hottest water you can, vacuum everything thoroughly, and she should be fine--until she comes into contact with lice again, LOL. Of course, you probably knew about the vacuuming, etc. Most schools, I thought, would alert families about the lice and do periodic head checks, including checking the head of any student returning after being sent home with lice. I'm glad your little one isn't bothered, just thinking about them makes my skin crawl!! Oh wait, I think we redid the treatment 7 days later to kill any newly hatched lice. Guest guest
no DO not USE LICE shampoo. it only makes the lice immune to it. What you do is go to the essential oils. There is an essential oil that will zap them suckers. It was in the newspaper around here last summer as well as other places. all you do is add a drop or 2 to regular shampoo, conditioner. add some to your laundry(dont forget you have to wash everything) and so on. Of course i forgot what it was. I think is was something like mountain Oregano or clove leaf or something. Im not sure. I could swear that it had the word mountain in it. Of course we didn't need the information at the time though i do thing we kept it I have no idea where to find it. I wish i could help more with the proper name. Ok well i need to go all this lice talk is starting to make MY head itch.
Guest guest
Thanks Beth! I bought her a shower cap & thought I would try some TTO with a carrier overnight. The last time she had them I was using the lice shampoo every couple of days. I also comb her hair out with the nit comb & pick them out by hand every day. I thought the schools were supposed to notify parents & check heads of classmates too. When she had it the first time, she was out on Christmas vacation. She did say that one of her classmates had been sent home because she had lice, but couldn't remember when. She's only 6, so I couldn't expect her to remember! So when they went back to school I called & spoke to the nurse to tell her had them over break. That day her entire class was checked. When I called yesterday to tell her she had them again & wasn't in class, she said she would check the rest of her class again. Of course I'm not going to know if she did or not. And she did tell me that they are seeing alot of cases this year. HELLO! Why not at least send a note home to parents to tell them to keep an eye out? Sorry, this is just really annoying the heck out of me. We pay for our water, so every extra load of laundry starts to add up. Add the detergent and lice shampoo & spray on top of that. And dh is still unemployed. Yeah, I'm a tad bit ticked off! LOL! I will let you all know how the TTO works. Thanks!
