Guest guest
To see if it has an impact on his hyperactivity and aggressiveness. We do use all three enzymes and have for almost a year but my son's BM's are still very abnormal. I'm hoping the stool and urine tests for yeast, parasites and bacteria will yield the missing piece to this puzzle and that once whatever he has is treated he will settle down and won't need GF/CF. If I try this GF/CF and it is the key, how soon will it take for me to see results? Thanks, KIM P.S. Maybe I just need to give him more enzymes? Currently giving 1 of each with every meal and snack. Maybe I should be giving 2 Zyme Prime, 2 AFP Pep and 1 No Fenol? Re: Oh bother...doctor wants us to do a " trial " of GF/CF...HELP! Did he say why? And for how long? Guest guest
I don't know if this will help, but I took away the ZP and NF and give just the AFP Pep (along with other things). We saw aggressiveness and tear bursts when using ZP and AFP. NF appeared to cause crying and moodiness, but we did not try this one long enough to know for sure. We did try the ZP for quite awhile along with the AFP. When I removed the ZP, the crying and aggressiveness stopped. I then added fish oil (Nordic Naturals), and chromium. We saw great behavior and wonderful cognitive gains, especially in the social arena and self awareness. We then added minerals and vitamins and saw teary behavior again. We removed the vitamins and minerals, and back to the previous gains. For diet, we follow Feingold (and I throw in salicylates here and there with a whole NF) and we still use selected GFCF foods because I have them. We are not GFCF, but we eat GFCF cereal and milk, waffles -- I like the variety. We rotate milks including almond, rice, soy, etc. and occasionally I will throw in some Stoneybrook Farms yogurt with AFP mixed in. Meals are usually meat and veggies, with a small serving of rice or other Feingold approved carb. We do not use GFCF bread anymore but stick to organic bread without additives/preservatives, etc. It's a real mish mash, but overall, appears to be well balanced for now. We change as we go... Hope you find your solution. S.
Guest guest
gfcf is wrong. if the sprinkled enzymes are not enough then scd empahsis is needed http://www.pecanbread.com/scdscience.html i don't agree with scd on the use of nut flours and elimination of non fermented dairy esp cream, but bascially its sound. > To see if it has an impact on his hyperactivity and aggressiveness. The cereals are yuck, I couldn't get my son to eat them, rice milk did him in, hated the taste. We now eat dinner type foods for breakfast, chicken, or beef. We couldn't do the gf/cf waffles because they have soy in them, nearly everything under the son has soy added. If my son didn't eat meat, I would be in trouble. One saving grace was that he is allowed UTZ regular potato chips, at least one junk food thing to tie him over when everyone else is snacking on stuff. We did a Feingold trial, worked ok, but not as good as the gf/cf in our situation. My son has boundless eneergy, chooses to play outside rather than watch TV! Ran a 1/4 mile today at track practice, he is only 5, my 13 y/o can just about do it.However, I am concerned now because of his increased energy, he will lose weight. He is already on the skinny side, hard time gaining, even when he was a slug on the couch. So I need to get in touch with MD re: possible weight loss. But so far it has worked wonders for us, and only one week. Hard for everyone, but I think worth it right now for the benefits I am seeing. Guest guest
I went gfcf with my son from 19-25 months. It didn't do anything for us except for educate me on what goes in to my children's bodies. I now have an organic household, trans-fat free household and working on a chemical free household. If you are really serious about looking in to this diet, you can buy " Special Diets for Special Kids II " from the bookstore or Amazon.com Also, you can take a peek at another group, gfcfkids. Of course, some leaders on this site say that it can take over 6 months to see results! Something about gluten being stored in the body. I say that is garbage and a way to explain away criticism, but so be it. I found the diet fairly easy once I cleared out the kitchen. There are also several on-line stores that sell gfcf exclusively. For the life of me, I can't recall the adresses. You can always go to the bookstore and buy the most recent issue of " Living Without " magazine. It is for gf people and the ads are all for gf products. The stores advertise there and will have their on-line addresses. SCD seems more logical. I think supplied you with the pecanbread address. Guest guest
Hi, We started with GFCF (also no corn, soy or eggs), then gradually went mostly Feingold. The GFCF was by far the hardest to start, but once we were underway, not so bad. Again, since most manufactured food (even GFCF) had unwanted soy or corn in it, we also changed our lifestyle (to organic, unprocessed, make-it-yourself). My children are younger, so while there was some complaining, initially, they are completely used to it now. I also used 's book, Special Diets for Special Kids. I first went to www.gfcfdiet.com and found the forbidden list. I bought foods I knew he could eat for a few days before I started. I made " normal " dinners and lunches, just making sure my ingredients were GF/CF. The biggest change here was no cheese. But, for instance, we wouldn't eat cheese on porkchops and salad. Tinkyada makes a rice pasta that we liked. Potato chips were handy the first week. Any fruits and vegetables you can have now are still good. After I saw gains the first week, I went ahead and invested in this book, which was a big help. I also invested in a bread machine. I also started looking for recipes on GFCFrecipes. As time went on, with success, I made further investments, like purging my kitchen of gluten items, etc. If you have the Feingold shopping guide, it won't be too hard to start from here. Just get the illegal list off the gfcfdiet web page, and at the store, just check the Feingold approved labels for the forbidden items (modified food starch, hvp, etc.). I don't know anybody for whom GFCF worked after 6 months, when they didn't see any gains really quickly, but you could check the GFCFKids board and see if you find someone on there who says they stuck with it for three months before they saw improvements. In our case it was fairly immediate (within three days), which, of course, added some impetus for really sticking with it. (I have a friend, bless her, who stuck with the diet for a year without seeing anything. I couldn't have done this.) We also had boundless energy the first week (gluten had the effect of putting my son in a stupor - he would literally lie down on playground equipment and stare up in space for 20 minutes at a time). I read a book by an ASD boy who was older who went GFCF. He said he felt this overwhelming sense of energy and well-being. He described it as just wanting to run and jump for the first time in his life. Also, a sign for me that this diet was essential for my son is that he stopped eating all carbs, and started eating vegetables, meat and fish - vegetables, literally, for the first time in two years. In other words, the pickiness really almost stopped. In our case, it was crystal clear that whatever else was going on, gluten was a huge problem for our child. I think you KNOW if you've hit upon the right thing. Judy .. > This Friday will be the end of six weeks on the Feingold diet for > us. Guest guest
Thanks for the reply. My son doesn't eat meat, although he will eat eggs and bacon (although I don't know if bacon is allowed). My son is the opposite of your son. He is 100 miles an hour all day long...extremely motor driven and too aggressive with his little sister. I wonder if GF/CF would calm him down and I wonder if we'd see quick results. If we didn't, I don't think I could keep it up. Thanks again, KIM We just completed our first week gf/cf! If you remove soy also, and continue with enzymes, it will probably take no longer than a month. Other common problem foods are corn and phenols. Guest guest
Thanks Pam. I'm going to read up on SCD too (thanks !) and hopefully through trial and error we will discover what all of his triggers are and modify a diet that is just right for him eventually. I'm still thinking the stool test will show bacteria and maybe yeast too. I appreciate the tips on the book and magazine and will go out and get them a.s.a.p. Thanks again, KIM Re: Oh bother...doctor wants us to do a " trial " of GF/CF...HELP! I went gfcf with my son from 19-25 months.
