Guest guest
Hi all, I have a 9 yr old ASD kid. He has tons of food allergies (has been GFCF since age 3, tried lots of bio-med in the past including oral chelation which has probably compounded yeast problems). Has a horrible yeast problem and probably has a very very leaky gut. I recently started enzymes with him around a 1.5 months back - the Houston HN Zyme Prime. I worked him upto around 1/2 cap for 2 weeks then intro the Peptidyze (1/2 cap) for another 2 weeks and then added in the No-Fenol. Initially I saw some pretty positive results - he has loose bowels (some 4-6/day) and these got firmer and he had BM's only 2x/day for some 4 days or so. He also seemed a little less stimmy and more focussed & his articulation seemed clearer. I managed to increase the dosage of HNZP & Pep to 1 cap/meal and even added in the No-fenol (1 or 2 per day). I saw some bed-wetting for the first week but that went away (luckily!). Then I don't know what happened as he went downhill - he got horribly hyper and got very irritable - lots of tantrums. I thought that perhaps since the Houston enzymes are fungal based, it was setting him off. I switched to the Kirkman enzymes (Complete DPP IV) - For a few days the tantrums seem to decline a little but he was back to loose & frequent stools and there was no change in cognition that I saw earlier ie: I saw no positives with kirkman that I was at least seeing in the Houston enzymes. Then he again got very stimmy/hyper and very irritable. I stopped all enzymes for a few days as I got very concered with the irritability. I'm restarted the HNZP - just 1/4 (or less) cap for major meals. In additon to the hyper/stimming, he is now horribly irritable & he has become an EATING MACHINE - he is desperate to keep eating something all day. He tantrums almost each hour as and when he gets hungry. Its quite worrying. School will restart in 3 weeks - the teacher will have a fit if he wants to keep eating all day and tantrumming. My child is verbal but will not indicate pain/discomfort - maybe he is experiencing some sort of discomfort in his abdominal area and hence the irritability/tantrums - what accounts for the hunger? Is there some kind of excess acidity in the stomach or something that is causing discomfort? Anyone experience these sort of side effects. Am I going about this all wrong - can I give anything else to help soothe him. Should I be trying a different brand eg: Enzymedica or something. Any advice would be appreciated. Saairam We've been through various bio-med treatments through the years - in effect his gut is still in pretty bad shape and there is huge yeast overgrowth etc. He is very hyperactive and stimmy in general. I'm back to trying bio-med again.

Enzymes did not address all my son's food issues [and they also did not address supplement problems at all]. For my son, he could not eat artificials, rice, corn, and luteins, even with enzymes. > I'm restarted the HNZP - just 1/4 (or less) cap for major meals. This is an exact description of my son when he was eating a food or supplement he did not tolerate. Dana

I don't know if you're child is experiencing what mine seemed to, but when we started enzymes my ds, who was only 2 at the time, seemed *furious* at his food. He would eat and eat (I gave enzymes with every single meal and snack from the get-go), then get mad at his food, and throw it, and like squeeze it furiously in his hands. I really felt like he sensed that his food wasn't giving him the " high " it had been before enzymes, and he was just trying to get that feeling back. He did settle down beautifully and we saw dramatic gains with the enzymes. In a way I think it's somehow easier when they're little and more under your control. I would say that since you saw progress with the HNI enzymes, that's great news. Now it's just about playing with type of enzymes and how much. Good luck. Guest guest
I should also add that my son didn't do well on the regular ZP, I think because of the papain and bromelain. Are you using the version with or without those two enzymes? And if you're using regular Pep, that also contains papain and/or bromelaim. We also saw increased hyperactivity when we started the enzymes, but that did settle down within three weeks. Maybe you could try: epsom salts baths/lotion activated charcoal about an hour after enzymes? Alka Seltzer GOLD after eating? I haven't used these last two things but I've read about kids doing well with them. You might want to review www.enzymestuff.com for more ideas on adjustment phase. > Hi all, > > I have a 9 yr old ASD kid.
Guest guest
I would also do a trial of the non-papain and bromelain enzymes. I too saw gains, then a worsening (dark circles under eyes, on and off diarreah) which did not subside, but in fact increased with the regular Zyme Prime. When I switched to SCD Zyme Prime, I could see within 36 hours that it had been another allergy. I then added AFPeptizyde with no problems. His dark circles disappeared, his bowels cleared up, and he was HAPPY. It's worth checking out if this is the case, especially as you suspect that enzymes may do positive things!
