Guest guest
There is on that I have found to be excellent. It's called Special Diets for Special Kids. It covers all of those issues. Also, as I'm sure Sheri will suggest ;-), see if you can get your sister to take him to a classical homoeopath. Best of luck, Meryl ADD/ADHD Hi. My nephew has been diagnosed ADD/ADHD. I *do* think this is an overdiagnosed condition ($$$) but there is a problem w/ him....let me give background information. He is in 1st grade and acts out (a lot). Always doing things he's not suppose to do, anger issues, can't sit still, poor student, etc.... " classic " signs of ADD. My sister would like for me to give her some alternative to the awful meds he's currently on (Ritalin). While on the Ritalin he is zombie like....no appetite....very quiet, etc. I have already suggested to cut out his diary (heavy diary fellow) and refined sugars, etc (he's also had ear problems).... Does anyone have in links or books to offer me on natural remedies for ADD-like behaviors. TIA. April McConnell http://www.cottonpickndiapers.com The BEST CottonPickNDiapers Around!!! Guest guest
Yes, diet is usually part of the issue, but please, please get this child to a homeopath while there is still hope http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/STEVELIST.htm A great book - Ritalin-Free Kids http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0761527699/ref=ase_wellwithinA/103-09 59395-1668617 Shows how these children are helped with homeopathy but NOT SOMETHING you can treat yourself - don't even try. You could mess things up permanently. Sheri At 07:35 PM 12/23/2001 -0000, you wrote: >Hi. My nephew has been diagnosed ADD/ADHD. Guest guest
Hi April, The book I would suggest is the Essential Oils Desk Refrerence. Essential oils can be beneficial for both ear problems and ADD. Their natural chemical constituents can be relaxing, calming, quieting, help to bring focus, support neurotransmitters, anti-infectious etc. You may find an oil blend such as Peace and Calming to be a healthy alternative to Ritalin. They help to support the mind and body helping to bring balance. Scientifically they have been shown to be effective for ADD. Basic information can be found on my website. Guest guest
I agree that YES way to many kids who are within normal range of being normal hyper kids are being put on medication needlessly. This is unfortunate. It also gives out a misconception for the disorder in general that people that has formed the same opinion as you who gives an upper eyebrow to the parents of kids that truly need meds. Meds are a true blessing for the ones who really need it! Without meds my two sons are in their own little world, not much goes in including anything from anyone. Can you imagine your children waking up full blast every morning? Speaking from my heart I know my children would be dumb as dirt without medication. The benefits my children have had since they was able to get diagnosis and properly treated is they both are extremely intelligent, both are avid readers. My oldest son was reading on a 7th grade level in 2nd grade. They both are in merit. They still struggle on a day to day basis to stay on task. I see their frustrations and truly understand what they are going through for I experience ADD symptoms and have every day of my life for as early as I can remember. The difference of my children is like night & day (medicated vs nonmedicated) I still think the disorder could be a subdisorder of thyroid or hormonal imbalance. Not everything is the docs trying to make another buck. I thank God that we are fortunate enough to have identified the problem and getting the help we need. I'm just waiting on the day for the cure. Believe me it is a serious condition that without treatment can drastically alter a person's life. -Dana -- add/adhd I agree with Gracia. It's just another label they slap on us in order to increase their bottom line. Guest guest
thyroid meds like Armour do several things----calm down the nervous system enormously and allow the brain to focus and think clearly. After I had a partial thyroidectomy I was unable to read, think or talk! I didn't get thyroid meds for 30 years so my most productive years were lost to me. Also cod liver oil is WONDERFUL brain food. We have a deficiency in omega 3 EFAs because of infant formula (very deficient in EFAs and other nutrients important for brain development), and because of hydrogenated oils used in all processed foods. Also eggs used to be a great source of omega 3s but now we get eggs from cage raised chickens, not so healthy. So I understand that drugs work, but your kids may thank you if you give them what their bodies need instead. http://www.westonaprice.org Gracia > I agree that YES way to many kids who are within normal range of being > normal hyper kids are being put on medication needlessly. Guest guest
i love your theory! you are right on! i have to remember this one!!! i can sit still, but not for a long time. for many, many years, i' get like i'm just gonna burst inside if i can't release some energy. you know, i just run (literally) out of the house. and that's so freeing. finally... sometimes my husband and I skip together. it's silly, but it's so lovely. i've been into dance for years...again, the movement makes me feel alive and free. maybe by other people's standards i sound like i have ADHD, but to me THEY are the ones who are different. In my opnion, I'm perfectly normal. maybe i was a monkey in another life, swinging from tree to tree... LOL. Hugs, Sheila Aprilcupcake@... wrote: I agree with Gracia. Guest guest
When my 8 yr old first started kindergarten(public school) three yrs ago,I was aproached by the school and told my son had symptoms of ADD and he needed to be tested. He had been in private pre-school for two years before public kindergarten and had no problems at all.I was told to get him tested or he would not be allowed to return to school......So I did some searching to find out why he was having problems....Here is what the REAL problem was.....When my son was 2,I discovered he had an allergy to red dyes and chocolate. These two things make him VERY hyper!!...I had a great pediatrician that believed in nutrition before drugs...thank god!..SOO....Come to find out that even though I was making my son his lunch for school everyday, turns out he was getting ice cream coupons from the library for exellent reading.Ofcourse what type of ice cream were they giving out???.....chocolate and strawberry!!!!.....problem solved WITHOUT drugs.....the school systems are quick to jump because they don't want to deal with a " problem " child yet they are the ones causing the problem.I tried to get them to limit these two allergy causing foods in their school and Ofcourse no one would listen...There are MANY studies on this problem of red dye(especially #40) and chocolate in children and if more doctors would get smart and choose nutrition first,I am sure half or more of the children on meds would not need them.Anyway, sorry for the long post,hehehe...Deneen:)
Guest guest
That is such a good example of allergies being mistaken for true ADHD. Good for you that you didn't have a doctor that just handed you a prescription needlessly! I agree doctors gives out meds way to easily just because the school recommended it. On the same token, the ones who have true ADHD meds are a blessing. Take care! -Dana -- Re: add/adhd When my 8 yr old first started kindergarten(public school) three yrs ago,I was aproached by the school and told my son had symptoms of ADD and he needed to be tested.

Guest guest
Thanks Deneen, That's very important to look at. I too send my children lunch, but it isn't always what they eat. They often trade food with friends, and of course there are pop machines everywhere! Pop machines are not allowed in schools that have a federally funded lunch program.. our school gets away with it as a " charter " school. They make way more money off of pop sales anyway. And they get the pop for free! Pepsi and Coke are just " pushers " . They get your kids hooked, hoping you will buy more outside the school environment. My ex-husband still has severe reactions to red dye and chocolate. terrible migraines. So this sensitivity can carry on into adulthood. But, it isn't a mystery really, red dye and chocolate and soda aren't exactly found in " the wild " . And that's why we have allergies. We aren't supposed to put those things in our bodies anyway. There must be a way to change school policy regarding this stuff!
