Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to the list and am just now beginning to study the enzymes and supplements, so I apologize for seeming ignorant about all of this. But if I'm reading your post correctly, there are problems with long-term melatonin usage? Please send me information on any such findings, as we have been giving my 6-year-old daughter 3mg melatonin (Melatonex) on and off for about 3 years. It would take her 3-4 hours to fall asleep and it was sometimes after midnight when she would finally fall asleep. Then she would wake up at 3am and be ready to start her day. We were both a wreck! The neurologist suggested trying the Melatonex and it was a miracle in the beginning. Over the years, we have experienced times (usually about once a year) when it starts to not work so well. We just guessed that her body became immune to the effects. When it starts to not work, we lay off for a month or so, then restart it and it starts working again. I read that some parents increas dosage, but my thinking was that if we increased the dosage, we would just have to keep increasing it everytime it started not to work. This seems to work for us. Every now and then, I search the internet for new information, but I have never found anything about the long-term effects it may have. So please send me anything that I might read about it. Many thanks, Janine
Guest guest
this sort of thing is a question of tradeoffs no sleep is prety destructive as well melatonin also increases serotonin so wether the problem i am finding with it is similar to sri's from a serotonin point of view i don't know but i suspect that impurities and truness of the melatonin molecule are substanial issues. if you search on the mayo clinic and melatonin you should find something, but don't panic, you have got a workable situtaion and the moment and if you think it needs working away from it i would look at lithium as per my web page lithium in the index of http://mueller_ranges.tripod.com/links/compendium/compendium.html it maybe that the melatonex is a better quality than the melatonin i have been taking but 3 mg is a fair amount so i think you are on the right track to start looking at the issue. http://www.sunsource.com/melatonex/melatonex.html interestingly it looks like ala also has quality, racemic and trueness of the ala molecule issues. do you have a hair test? you may also have to look at scd emphasis. > Hi, > I'm new to the list and am just now beginning to study the enzymes > and supplements, so I apologize for seeming ignorant about all of > this. Guest guest
I have heard what you mention with melatonin...that if used regularly you might have to stop it for a bit and then re-continue and it works again. Don't know why. You might want to try epsom salts in the evening to help with sleep. www.enzymestuff.com/epsomsalts.htm You are wise to focus on sleep issues up front. From the very beginning my neurologist emphasized the importance of regular and sufficient sleep. Boy, it makes a world of difference. .
