We (myself and my 4.5 yo) are doing AIT. It is specially modulated music listen to in special ear phones to re-train the ear so that it can listen better and not be so sound sensitive. There are many different programs/theories/philosphies. We are doing 'The Listening Program' because it is a home program (we don't have to go to a clinic) and it was one of the cheapest (~$300 to rent the CD's and the equipment from an OT or SLP that runs it)- I figured since we have neither the money nor the time to do a fancy clinic based program (some run $5,000) and there is no more of a guarantee that the clinic program will work better than the home program we decided to give the home program a shot. We are about 1/2 way thru the 8 week session of doing 15 min. listening 2x/day (we'll probably finish it in 10 weeks due to fit's and starts, some days not getting both sessions in) and I have noticed my son is not nearly as sound sensitive - though he still covers his ears and is afraid of the toilet at school he has stopped crying around sounds that upset him. The other thing I like about the home program is it's easy to repeat if we find a second round to be necessary (we bought the fancy headphones and a friend gave me the CD's). Guest guest
We used an in-home AIT program as well, but it is even cheaper than what you describe renting from an OT. The first time we did AIT we used a practitioner and it cost $1,000. The in-home program was just as good and we ordered the CDs from a website after I spoke with the man who developed. We have done this several times and it really helped with sound sensitivity. I think if you do a search for EAse you will find the site. The CDs cost us not much more than $100 for two at the times we bought them. We bought two and have used them both with success. What is AIT >and did it for a year. Guest guest
Hello, can I say a few things about AIT. We had a hearing specialist do it with my son and for the 1000 I might have gone to the Pfeiffer Treatment Center if I had it to do over. Other adults have said it only helps for a few months - This is what it does- It retrains your brain not to hear all the things we take for granted...Like lets stay you are at your friend apartment sitting waiting for them to get ready and the apartment above her someone flushes the toilet and you hear a big rush of water go through the wall in your friends apartment and you are wondering how you friend can stand to live there. Well a week later you are back waiting for your friend again and you don't remember hearing that big rush of water at all.. Well your brian figured out that rush of water was something you did not need to hear - and you brain filters it out... So AIT is for children who are sensivetive to noise--- I don't know from this thread whether or not this is a problem with your child. I want to post something else about things to try before you do AIT I found when I was doing my research on AIT. Good luck sorting out treatments. My 2 Cents Ann
