(and any other members!):

My sister has " fever blisters " , which I THINK are a type of Herpes virus? They

are so painful for her, and she is building an " immunity " to many types of

medications she is using to treat this. I was wondering if Virustop by

Enzymedica would work to heal her of this virus? If so, what dosage would you

recommend? She is an adult, approx 150 lbs. Also, my son has cold sores off

and on--another type of Herpes virus. Will Virustop help get rid of that virus

as well? He is only 13, weighs approx 100 lbs. What would be a proper dosage?

How would they know if they are getting rid of the virus? Rash? Redness?

Soreness? Don't know if you know the answers for sure, but I am very interested

in trying to help them both. Thanks so much!

I don't know about virustop but cold sores/fever blisters are caused by the

same virus. Because they are viral as your son's immune system gets

stronger, he should be able to control the virus that causes them most of

the time.

Lysine, an amino acid available in health shops, will control cold sores in

the meantime. You can often buy ointment containing lysine that will help

heal the cold sores quickly. Lysine also comes in tablets - you would have

to crush them up and mix a small amount in juice I guess - haven't given the

tablets to my 3 year old. I just use the ointment as my dd generally only

gets cold sores in winter. (The tablets might be better for your sister -

but she needs to ask someone how to use them as I think you are supposed to

take them for a short period to build up levels.....????)

Zinc also aids in healing and immune function, so if you aren't using zinc

yet, you might start. A zinc ointment would help with healing if you aren't

ready to start internal zinc.

Lemon balm (a garden plant) can be used to heal and prevent outbreaks. You

can make tea and apply it with cotton to the sore as it has antiviral

properties that work on this virus. Your sister could drink the tea as

well - it tastes nice.

Low thyroid function is often connected to constant cold sore outbreaks.

Does your sister have thyroid problems?

I use lysine for one of my kids, it works great for him. I am also

giving him a multi amino acid supplement which contains lysine, so I

can build up his levels to prevent these from happening in the future.

Selenium and B vitamins also help him with this issue.

Dana, do you give lysine every day, without breaks?

I didn't realize cold sores could be a sign of low thyroid function. My

daughter's T4 level was slightly low, but my doctor didn't want to treat it just

" keep an eye on it. "

She has had a bunch of cold sore this year.

I don't think that cold sores = low thyroid so that may or may not be part

of your daughter's problem. But I have read that it CAN be an indication of

a problem with thyroid. My NT dd has no thyroid problem and gets them when

she is sick.

No, I give lysine only when he has cold/canker sores. I give the

multi amino supplement most days.

> What amino acid suplements are you giving, Dana? Anyone else giving

this as a multi and if so which ones?

I use Max Amino Caps by Country Life, from my local health food store.

I also add carnitine, carnosine, and glutathione separately.
