Can enzymes cause diarrhea?

My son is 6 and has been on the SCD for the last 2.5 years. Overall

it has worked well for him. He has classic autistic enterocolitis

(confirmed thru Krigsman colonoscopy) and a history of loose

stools. The SCD was pretty effective in helping to normalize his

stools, yet he does go thru periods of looser stools for no apparant

reason, maybe gut bugs, maybe something he ate. We are in one of

those phases right now (the last 1.5 weeks), but this time I am more

concerned because his stools are very runny and definitely qualify

as diarrhea. The one thing I have been doing that is different is

started giving him an enzyme with each meal (either Digest Gold, or

more recently Lipo Similase). Prior to giving him the enzymes he

awas having a formed stool, or a formed stool with some mush around

it. Now they are entirely mushy and yucky with no form. I haven't

seen this in years and I do not like it one bit! Can enzymes to

this to some kids? Obviously I have decided to take a break from

the enzymes and see if this resolves, but I wanted to get some input

from the more expereienced enzyme parents.

Thanks,

Beth

the problem is enzyme formulations are not equal. they are not just a

little different they are atkins scd different.

i have written up about enzymes and my way preffered brand

look for enzymes in 'other supplements i take' in the index of

http://tinyurl.com/2csa3

i have been to some effort to post about this on various boards and

it is distressing to see advice so pointedly ignored

Thanks for your reply, and I will look into the HNI enzymes. But

what in his current enzymes could be causing the diarrhea?

Thanks,

How long do these episodes usually last?

Beth,

Yes, enzymes can result in looser stools. Not everyone gets this, but

it is a known common adjustment that can happen with any enzymes. One

of my sons had this, the other didn't.

If your son was prone to loose stools and then started enzymes (and

you weren't prepared for this), the stools can be looser. When

enzymes break bonds, more molecules of water are released which can

results in the loose-ness. More food and water is being processed

through too. I can be from 1 day to 1 week or a little more before

the body adjusts to more food and water being processed. Also,

enzymes can kill off pathogens and remove gunk in the gut. The body

might be trying to flush this debris along and out. Try reducing the

dose at least to half if your son or you are too uncomfortable with

the results. Or try 1/4 dose. This allows the body to adjust more

gradually.

Because of your son's history of a very sensitive gut, I would go

slower. If he has bad gut bugs which the SCD helps, and flare-ups,

the enzymes could be doing some finishing work on the bacteria and

helping intestine tissue heal. Do you give the SCD yogurt? It can be

very healing as well. If you give yogurt, did you see a similar

response when you started it?

Thank you for your helpful reply. The loose stools usually last a

week or two, but I usually intervene with a strict (intro phase) SCD,

more probiotics, more antifungals when this happens, so I don't

normally just let it take it's course.

I am thinking of trying the HNI enzymes but have been timid about

them since he has had such a bad response to enzymes (loose stools).

If I were to try the HNI enzymes, which ones would you recommend, and

in what order should I introduce them?

Thanks,

Beth
