In order to replicate, the herpes virus requires arginine, another amino acid that's common in foods and necessary to human life; but lysine is thought to interfere with the absorption of arginine in the intestine. It's a long way from this observation to a herpes cure, and most studies have been inconclusive. A small study conducted at the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1984 did show that lysine supplements-1,000 milligrams a day-helped reduce recurrences of cold sores. He says he feels a tingle before a cold sore comes out, thats when he starts, 500mg three times per day, usually for 2 days because he forgets after that - tingle and itch are gone. Only once in 2 years has this not worked and that was when the sore was becoming visible before he noticed, it didn;t last as long as they used to before though. It's one of those things you might not get that often, but you know exactly what's going on when you do. That distinctive tingle...I could feel this stuff start to work right away. Interesting my holistic dentist, who became holistic because he was mercury poisoned, said it's something he takes every day. Just not sure why.
