As most of you know, I have a 17 year old son with severe nonverbal autism.

I am at a crossroads here and don't know what to do. will be 18 in 2

months (June), he attends a local public highschool. His IEP meeting is in 2

weeks, and I have no idea how to ask for help with him on his IEP. He needs to

attend a summer program (but according to school teachers, school doesn't

provide a summer program he can attend) so he doesn't regress, he needs more

community based activities, more daily life skills, and discussion about what

happens next year (whether he stays for another year or he graduates). Any

suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Best Wishes,

Sue....

5 months, 2 weeks and 2 days until our Disney World Vacation!!

Hey Sue, Question, Does have therapies with an OT at all? Both of my children have OT services through out the summer which seems to help a great deal with daily life rituals. We also attend camps (4-H, Christian Youth Camp, or some others like that) through out the summer months that help as well. Best of luck for you and April, Ajerseygirl52@... wrote: As most of you know, I have a 17 year old son with severe nonverbal autism. Vicki,

No I haven't because we live in a small community in a rural area of

Virginia, and I wasn't thinking it would be a complex thing, but maybe I am

wrong.

Thank you for the advice!~ Have a great weekend!!

Sue,

Sometimes vocational programs offer summer programs for those in the transition

years. Special needs kids/teens/young adults are eligible for appropriate

public education until age 22. My understanding is that if a given school or

district does not offer what the student needs they have to pay/transport the

child to a nearby appropriate school which does...I don't have kids so others

please correct me if I'm wrong.
