1. High Fat Diets Trigger Diabetes High fat diets help trigger

diabetes by disabling a key enzyme necessary for the production of insulin,

according to researchers from the University of California at San Diego.

The investigators believe the discovery of this subtle mechanism helps explain

the close link between obesity and blood sugar problems and could lead to new

ways to prevent and treat diabetes.

" We have discovered ... a molecular trigger which begins the chain of events

leading from hyperglycemia to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, " said

Jamey Marth, professor of cellular and molecular medicine at the university and

an investigator with the Medical Institute.

" If you could somehow stimulate production of this enzyme, you might be able

to render animals, and perhaps humans, resistant to high-fat diet-induced

diabetes.

" If our findings can be applied to humans, they should give us important

insights into how type 2 diabetes may be prevented and treated. "

Obesity has long been linked to type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the

disease in which the body does not make enough insulin, or cannot properly use

it.

In the United States, two out of three adults are overweight or obese. Experts

estimate that obese people are up to 80 times more likely to develop diabetes.

Marth and his colleagues studied the glycosyltransferase enzyme (GnT-4a),

which helps the pancreas sense how much sugar is in the blood and release enough

insulin to help process it.

In normal mice put on a fatty diet, the enzyme was repressed, leaving

pancreatic cells unable to sense sugar levels - and eventually leading to

diabetes.

" Our findings suggest that the current human epidemic in type 2 diabetes may

be a result of GnT-4a enzyme deficiency, " said Marth. He said people who inherit

a faulty gene that controls the enzyme would probably also be vulnerable to

diabetes.

2. Moderate Drinking Cuts Cancer Risk More good news on the benefits of

moderate drinking - it may lower the risk of kidney cancer, at least in

middle-aged women, according to an interesting study from Sweden.

The study, headed by Dr. Alicja Wolk, of the prestigious Karolinska Institute

in Stockholm, analyzed information on the drinking habits of nearly 60,000 women

between 1987 and 1990. At that time all the women were 40 to 76 years old and

free of cancer.

By 2004, the researchers found, the women had developed a total of 132 cases

of a common type of kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma, according to a report

published in the International Journal of Cancer.

And analysis showed those women who habitually drank at least one serving of

alcohol per week had a 38 percent lower risk of renal cell carcinoma than those

who drank less. For women over 55 years old, the risk was reduced even more - by

66 percent.

The Swedish researchers aren't sure how or why alcohol exerts it's anti-cancer

effect, however they think it may work somewhat like the statin drugs, which

have also been shown to help protect against kidney cancer.

" In postmenopausal women, moderate consumption of alcohol was associated with

decreased triglyceride concentrations, " they note in the study, published in the

International Journal of Cancer.

" Thus, alcohol consumption has similar effects as cholesterol-lowering statin

drugs ... use of which has been associated with a 20 percent decrease of renal

cell carcinoma risk. "

3. Amazing Cancer-Fighting Powers of Vitamin D Taking 1000 IUs of vitamin D

every day can cut the risk of breast, colon and ovarian cancer by up to 50

percent, according to a new study by top University of California experts who

say Americans are getting far too little of the powerful nutrient.

Dr. Cedric Garland, one of the top cancer epidemiologists in the country,

headed a review and analysis of nearly every scientific study involving vitamin

D and cancer done since 1966. In all 63 studies were reviewed.

And the results were overwhelming: vitamin D appeared to be instrumental in

protecting against breast, colon and ovarian cancer. It was most protective

against colon cancer - cutting the risk by 50 percent. It reduced risks of

ovarian and breast cancers by about 30 percent.

The study also found that most people don't get nearly enough vitamin D.

Americans average around 320 IUs daily. Sunlight stimulates the body to produce

vitamin D and the experts believe the growing vitamin D deficit may be due to

people's increased fears of getting too much sunshine.

The researchers also found that people living in northeastern U.S., where it

is less sunny, were more likely to be deficient in vitamin D - and had higher

rates of cancer.

African-Americans with darker skins were also more likely to be deficient in

vitamin D - and they too had higher cancer rates.

The researchers say their finding could explain why black Americans die sooner

from cancer than whites, even after allowing for differences in income and

access to care.

" The high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency combined with the discovery of

increased risks of certain types of cancer in those who are deficient, suggest

that vitamin D deficiency may account for several thousand premature deaths from

colon, breast, ovarian and other cancers annually, " Dr. Garland wrote.

" A preponderance of evidence from the best observational studies... has led

to the conclusion that public health action is needed. Primary prevention of

these cancers has been largely neglected, but we now have proof that the

incidence of colon, breast and ovarian cancer can be reduced dramatically by

increasing the public's intake of vitamin D. "

He says getting enough vitamin D from diet would be difficult - and getting

more from sunlight would increase the risk of skin cancer.

Instead, Dr. Garland favors supplementation. " The easiest and most reliable

way of getting the appropriate amount is from food and a daily supplement, " they

say.

The 1000 IUs daily dose they propose of is two-and-a-half times the U.S.

recommended daily allowance. The upper limit for safe intake is 2,000 IUs.

4. Dr. Blaylock On Preventing Colon Cancer

The following is an excerpt from the Blaylock Wellness Report, " Better

Digestion: Protect Your Intestines, Colon and Vital Organs from Disease and

Cancer " : [http://www.newsmax.com/blaylock/17.cfm]

This year 131,000 people were diagnosed with colon cancer and 56,000 will die

from the disease, making it second only to lung cancer as a killer of Americans.

Of all the varieties, colon cancer has the strongest links to diet, in terms of

both prevention and causation.

Without a doubt, Americans consume more carcinogens than just about any other

population in the world. As a whole, our diet is high in carcinogenic fats,

cancer-causing nitrosamines and nitrites and tumor-promoting sugar. And worse

yet, we eat dangerously low amounts of fiber, vegetables and fruits.

Finally, recent evidence indicates that glutamate, found in MSG and other food

additives, is a powerful catalyst for the growth and spread of cancer. That is,

glutamate enhances the growth of cancer, making it much more deadly.

Generally speaking, it takes decades of nutritional abuse before colon cancer

develops.

The first changes occur within special clusters of cells found in the lining

of the colon. These are called aberrant crypt foci. The more of these you have,

the more likely you are to develop colon cancer.

Several nutrients have demonstrated the ability to suppress these precancerous

cell clusters. The most impressive fighters are curcumin, conjugated linolenic

acid (CLA), quercetin, DHA, natural vitamin E, vitamin E succinate, silymarin,

ellagic acid, N-butyrate (ButyrAid) and vitamin B6.

Calcium suppresses colon cancer in those who maintain a high-fat diet.

Research shows that curcumin, a flavonoid extracted from the spice turmeric, can

powerfully suppress many types of cancer, especially colon cancer.

Cumin and turmeric are staples of Indian cuisine and this has been thought to

account for the significantly lower incidence of colon cancer within the Indian

population.

N-butyrate, a short-chain oil, has been shown to powerfully inhibit colon

cancer development as well as the growth of cancers that have already developed.

Research shows that the oil CLA also powerfully suppresses breast and colon

cancer. As little as 1,000 mg. a day will be effective. This special oil

regulates immunity and directly suppresses colon cancer formation. DHA and

Omega-3 oils also suppress colon cancer.

Three flavonoids that provide powerful protection against colon cancer are

quercetin, silymarin and ellagic acid.

A tremendous amount of recent evidence demonstrates the dramatic anticancer

effects of ellagic acid. It is a flavonoid found in most berries (especially the

meeker raspberry), walnuts, pecans, pomegranate and muscadine grapes. The dose

is 1,000 mg. twice to three times a day.

However, I would caution you to avoid pomegranate juice since it contains

about 35 grams of sugar per serving - and that's a lot.

5. Flu Vaccines Not Much Help to Elderly

Flu vaccines may not work as well as we thought for people over 65, according

to a surprising new study from the University of Washington.

Despite the widespread belief that they cut mortality risk for the elderly by

nearly 70 percent, a careful new work published in the International Journal of

Epidemiology, shows they don't reduce death risk by nearly that much.

A. , MD, MPH, and colleagues say that healthy elderly people are

generally much more likely to get flu shots - and that very fact has confused

previous studies.

When the U. Washington team compared generally healthy elderly people who got

vaccinated to those who did not, they found much smaller benefits for those who

got flu shots.

In fact, the researchers write " The magnitude of this bias ... was sufficient

to account entirely for the [reduced risk of death in vaccinated people]

observed during influenza season. "

The team compared death rates among the vaccinated and unvaccinated elderly

people before, during and after flu season. Those who got flu vaccine had a

lower death risk in all time periods - even when there was no flu going around.

The researchers also looked at 252 people aged 65 and older who died during a

flu season and matched them with 572 people who died at other times.

Elderly people who got flu vaccines were 41percent less likely to die during

flu season. But those who didn't get flu shots were much more likely to have

health problems and when the researchers compared people with the same health

status, they found that vaccinated elderly people were only 29 percent less

likely to die during flu season.

An editorial accompanying the report argues that we need better flu vaccines

to protect elderly people and should put more emphasis on vaccinating school

children who are the major spreaders of flu.

6. Antioxidant-Rich Diet Cuts Age-Related Blindness Eating a diet rich in

key antioxidants can reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration by 50

percent or more, according to a new study from the Netherlands.

Dr. Redmer van Leeuwen and his colleagues at the Erasmus Medical Center in

Rotterdam tracked over 4,000 elderly people for eight years to see the

relationship between vitamin intake and often-devastating condition.

Occurring when abnormal blood vessels grow in the eye, damage the retina and

blur central vision, macular degeneration has become the most common type of

age-related vision loss in developed countries.

It affects more than one out of 10 white adults over the age of 80, and is the

leading cause of severe vision loss in Americans 60 and older. Sufferers can

become debilitated and unable to read, recognize faces or drive.

The researchers focused on key antioxidants - vitamins C and E, beta carotene

and the mineral, zinc - and the findings were remarkable.

People with above average intakes of these nutrients had a 35 percent lower

risk of developing macular degeneration, compared with those whose diets

provided a below-average level of even just one of the four.

Conversely, participants with below-average levels of all four had a 20

percent higher risk of macular degeneration.

" This study suggests that the risk of age-related macular degeneration can be

modified by diet; in particular, by dietary vitamin E and zinc, " said the

researchers.

They added that eating foods high in the four nutrients is probably more

effective than taking supplements. Their study appears in the Journal of the

American Medical Association.

7. Oral Contraceptives: No Increased Cervical Cancer Risk

Long-term use of oral contraceptives does not increase a woman's risk of

developing cervical cancer, according to a new study from the National Cancer

Institute.

Older studies linking the pill to cancer had never taken into account

cancer-causing effects of human papilloma virus (HPV), according to the NCI's

Dr. Philip E. Castle and colleagues.

In the new study, the NCI team investigated the development of precancerous

cervical cells in young women who tested positive for HPV and had minimally

abnormal Pap smears. This effectively took HPV out of the equation.

Among the HPV-infected women, the likelihood of finding precancerous cells was

no higher for current or former oral contraceptive users than for those who had

never used the pill, the team reports. The study appears in the International

Journal of Cancer.

8. Updated Advice On Seafood

Americans should eat seafood twice a week despite concerns about pollution -

and this is especially true for pregnant and nursing women and children,

according to new guidelines produced by the government's National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration, NOAA.

The guidelines summarize scientific findings presented at a Washington, D.C,

conference sponsored by the United States, Norway, Canada, and Iceland, and

assisted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

" Not eating seafood is more harmful than eating it, " said Dr. E. M.

Lands, a retired professor of biochemistry at the University of Michigan. " The

benefits of eating seafood far outweigh the risks of the little bit of mercury

in the seafood. "

The new recommendations state that nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids,

iodine, iron and choline, present in fish such as wild and farmed salmon,

shrimp, pollock, cod, canned light tuna and catfish, are important in brain

development and may lessen the effects of dyslexia, autism, hyperactivity and

attention deficit disorder.

As for mercury, the NOAA says " Women will not put their babies at risk if they

avoid eating shark, swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel, tuna steaks and whale

meat until after they have delivered and stopped breast feeding. " They also

recommend that women planning to become pregnant avoid these fish for six months

beforehand.
