Guest guest
You know, when I was surfing the net trying to figure out what might be a root cause for all my symptoms, encephalitis really hit it. But I don't believe every followed it up with one of my docs. I start my first treatment tomorrow; it's just with the PRN, the Big Doc is the Sep 15. I'll ask tomorrow as well as the 15th. Prayers to ya...take care of you. I'll post what going on; see what the input is. Hugs to ya Sheryl Re: [ ] Spinal Tap Thanks for your support Sheryl. I'm sorry we had to meet like this, but glad to have you as a new friend. We are so blessed to have the Internet. I d never have learned what was wrong or had so many people to help me if it had not of been for this tool. I used to hike and camp a lot too. In the last twenty-five years before I got too ill, I had camped in WI, TN, KY, NC, and SC frequently!! Plenty of opportunity to be re-infected!! So, you think the tick broke your brain's blood barrier too?? Did you get encephalitis also?? LOL, yep, I've fallen asleep at stop lites too! Three months before I fell down the flight of stairs that did me in with lyme, I wrecked my new truck while driving... no idea where or what I hit. Woke up driving two towns away from where I last remember being. Kinda scary. I'm laying low, mostly staying home till I get an audience with a LL NEURO. My kids help me get stuff done. Remind me to eat, take pills and stuff... Rather pathetic, but what choice do I have?? I know what you mean.... sometimes I just can't believe how long I've been ill either.... I seriously have no idea what " normal " is even supposed to be! I'm hoping a LL Neuro will be able to subdue some of my symptoms and sort things out. Keeping my fingers crossed anyway. I really appreciate your prayers. Can use all of 'em I can get!! Thanks again, Carol
Guest guest
Hi Group: Have any of you had to have a spinal tap and suffered prolonged headache afterward. With one I an writing about, the neurologist had the person " sit up " right after the tap!! You are supposed to stay down as far as I know!! Now the person is suffering for at lest the last 5 days with this headache, and the bad part is can't now go to the hospital where she is supposed to be getting her IV Rocephin!! Thanks: -GLEN
Guest guest
Lots of people do get headaches after spinal tap. and laying flat may help as does drinking lots of fluids after the procedure. people generally should rest for 24 hours after the tap, laying down once they get home for several hours. That said, a headache that is persisting for 5 days, especially if it is worsening might indicate that there is a persistent leak of spinal fluid. This is a known complication of the procedure and cannot be predicted, and as far as I know has no particular measures one can take to avoid it happening. There are actions that can be taken to remedy the situation. Your friend should contact the physician either the primary care one or the neurologist and explain what is happening. An incapacitating headache can be treated with what is called a blood patch. I have seen it happen that this has to occur more than once, but usually the first one works just fine. So lots of fluids and contact the treating physician to let them know what is going on. Guest guest
I've had three so far. The procedure itself is a bit weird... just feels weird when they actually do it, but you get a local injected first so I wouldn't actually say it hurts. The admonition to " GO HOME AND LAY FLAT " cannot be overstated. Post-lumbar puncture headache is horrid, and going back to the hospital for a blood patch (the fix) is more uncomfortable than the LP, in my opinion... not to mention expensive, since you get to pay for another hospital visit. I let my headache go for a week before going back in for the blood patch mostly because it hurt so bad to do anything but lay flat that I couldn't comprehend anything, let alone ride in the car to hospital. If that should happen to you, do not wait! My surgeon said I was an idiot for letting a leak go that long, and in hindsight I agree with him. Things usually go fine. Only once have I had that headache out of three punctures, and I didn't lay really flat that time but propped my head up in bed. Flat means flat, LOL. Best of luck, > > Have any of you here had a spinal tap? If so is it painful? I have had a child but I had the epidural while I was having a contraction so I really didn't feel it. I am probably getting nervous over nothing. > > >
Guest guest
My wife and I had a spinal tap on the same day. The procedure for me wasn't painful at all - but a little uncomfortable laying on side and " expecting " pain. My wife said hers was a little bit painful (done by 2 different doctors). The worst part for both of us was the after effects. You have to go home and lay totally flat for (I think) 12 hours? But we both got really bad headaches, temporary loss of hearing in one ear for a day, and just felt lousy for the next 2 days. Her headache got so terrible she had to go to the ER. Then the lab " lost " my fluid so I never did find out if it tested positive for lyme. My wife was being tested for something else. So, I guess I'd just say only get one if they say it is " really, really, absolutely, necessary " . I mean, a lot of medicine is not pleasant, but we endure it so we can get better. I hope all goes well for you - whatever you choose. Don wrote: > Have any of you here had a spinal tap? If so is it painful?
