Guest guest
have people been able to figure out where the metals came from on their child's hair test? I don't know where my daughter has gotten bismuth (no pepto bismol), cadmium???? Are most crib sheets flame retardant? Do you think I should get a new crib mattress that doesn't have springs? Is there a way to get your house/water tested? Thanks in advance,
Guest guest
There's also a diaper rash ointment that contains bismuth, someone here will know the brand name. It's also in make-up so if your daughter has been in close contact with someone who wears make-up which contains it that might be the source. Yes, crib sheets and mattresses are flame retardant (that's why the " back to sleep " campaign has reduced SIDS, by getting their faces a little farther from the fumes). There's a crib mattress cover you can buy or get a chemical-free one. In the US one has to have a prescription to get chemical-free mattresses/futons. I think DDI will test water through DLS. Guest guest
We use the bath balls and they do help with chlorine. They are not nearly as good overall as the large (and expensive) carbon filters such as those sold through www.aehf.com. This is because they don't take out nearly the array of toxins and pollutants as the large carbon block filters. However, for a chlorine filter, they do pretty good. We always take ours when we travel and they seem to remove nost of the chlorine from even the worst chlorine water we've encountered in motels, at least enough to make it tolerable. Last time I looked, the www.aehf.com website had a chart that showed which metals and pollutants are removed by which type of water filters. It was very interesting. If it's not up on the website any more, you could perhaps call them and maybe they could mail you one. It might be reproduced in their catalog. at their store is pretty helpful (they guy who answers is not so helpful, often grumpy so if you get him, might want to ask for or even Vanita!!). I wouldn't say you are defeating the purpose drinking filtered water, but if you really want to clean things up to the max, it's a good idea to use filtered bath/shower water. I read somewhere that taking a shower with chlorinated water in an enclosed tub or shower is worse for your lungs than spending the same amount of time breathing the pollution in LA traffic. Someone actually did this study. You can get non-toxic beds from www.furnature.com. Since they are made to order, I'm sure you can get one for a crib. They have test pillows of the actual materials you can buy in advance to see if you/your child has any problem with any of them. Then, you can leave out any materials you don't want. They have test pillows for the cotton, the wool, and the 100% natural rubber. So far we have tested the cotton and wool and no problem. The pillows are $25 and they are great for the kids, your neck, etc. They give you the $25 off for each test pillow you've bought if you later order a bed. They have both futons and beds with springs. They also do custom furniture like couches, dining chairs, loungers, etc., but it's pretty spendy! They can make any piece of furniture you want in a non-toxic fashion if you have the bucks. www.coyuchi.com sells organic cotton crib bedding. They are really expensive, but we've gotten things way cheap by calling them and seeing whats in the " seconds " box.
