Guest guest
, Sorry, I tend to use terminology soapmakers use when talking about this stuff, just like you guys confuse me here with terminology common to this community. A base is already made. All you have to do is add scent. So easy! Since I can't foresee a time in my future when I'd want to make a liquid soap, preferring bar soap, this is the route for me, too. For laundry soap, I grate up plain soap I've made myself, using cheaper oils (hey, it's laundry soap!) and made to have no extra oils left over after the chemical process that makes oil, water and lye turn into soap. I grate it up with a salad shooter, then mix with water to make liquid laundry soap. I don't use any scent, but do add a little orange essential oil to enhance the cleaning strength. Cleans great! For dishwasher soap (not the hand washing kind, but the kind you put into the dishwasher since I hate hand washing dishes), I grate up same, super plain soap, let it dry out thoroughly (called curing), run it through the food processor until it's powdered, 1-2 minutes, then mix that with equal parts citric acid, borax, baking soda and grated soap. I use 2 tablespoons per load. Instead of a rinsing agent in that little dispenser, I just fill it up with white vinegar. I'll try to explain the ingredient list for the shampoo. This is a lot of sometimes technical information, gleaned from the website of my supplier as well as my handy dictionary of cosmetic ingredients, which I can't live without. I have a feeling some might like more info over less. I am a major label reader since I started making all my bath and body goodies, and when I compared this to any tearless shampoo I could find in the stores, it was just leagues better. You be the judge for your family. :-) The supplier is Ingredients to Die For, based in Austin, Texas (http://www.ingredientstodiefor.com/index.php), and the Baby Bubbles are specifically at http://www.ingredientstodiefor.com/item.php?item_id=101 & category_id=27. They regularly run free shipping specials. I buy this stuff by the gallon when they do. They're geared towards the high-end home toiletry maker, but their bases are great for anyone. Nothing smells yucky without scent because there's nothing really bad in there. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate and Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate - A versatile anionic surfactant blend which can be used in a variety of personal care applications. It is a mild surfactant with good foam quality and viscosity building characteristics in formulated products. It is used for children and baby products as well as for adult products where sensitive skin is involved. The Sulfoacetate/Sulfosuccinate Blend can be used as a mild primary or secondary surfactant. It is less irritating than lauryl and lauryl ether sulfates, and easily builds high viscosity with amides and salts, providing excellent foam stability. It is an exceptional hard water foamer, a highly effective lime soap dispersant and foams well in the presence of soap. Should be formulated within the pH range of 5.5 - 6.5. Cocoamidopropyl Betaine - is an amphoteric, 30% active aqueous solution that is used in shampoos, bubble baths and liquid handsoaps. Provides good foaming and foam liquid stabilization with excellent wetting properties. Compatible with anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants. Cocoamidopropyl Betaine is derived from Coconut Oil and is primarily used as a secondary surfactant in aqueous systems. Polysorbate 80 - is an emulsifier derived from sorbitol, and has no known toxicity. Quaternium-79 Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein (WheatPRO Plus) - Natural lipids from palm oil combine with natural (WHEAT derived) wheat protein, and are given a cationic charge for excellent substantivity. ::What is Quaternium-79?:: Natural lipids in skin and hair, lost through harsh cleansing, are replaced by the revolutionary Quaternium-79, a cationic conditioning agent born of Virgin Palm Oil. Virgin Palm Oil contains a host of skin and hair benefits, including unrivalled antioxidant properties due to its unmatched content of Tocotrienols, an antioxidant several times stronger than tocopherols. Rice Bran Oil is often hailed for its tocotrienol content, but it runs a second to the legendary palm. Virgin Palm is also an excellent source of carotenes, which explains its rich color. The Quaternium-79 is cationic (positively charged) so that it is more substantive (drawn to) the anionic (negatively charged) skin and hair, and in fact.is drawn most to the areas that need it most. This feature allows for the formulation of " adjustable conditioning " products. In hair care, this quat also aids in static charge reduction, reducing fly-aways. ::What are the benefits of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein?:: HAIR CARE- Wheat Protein is well hailed for it's strengthening properties. Penetrating the cortex, it provides replenishment by adding Cystine to hair weakened by chemical treatments and regular hair maintenance. This makes it an ideal choice for hair waving systems, post-perm conditioners and products for damaged hair. SKIN CARE-Wheat Protein has been shown as one of the most effective pore minimizers in modern skin care, providing the " porcelain " look when utilized in facial cleansers, toners, serums, gels, or lotions. Provides balanced moisture, and gently nourishes. Vegetable Glycerin - we all know what glycerin is, right? Usually the by-product of commercial soapmaking processes (they take out the very thing that's good for your skin!), it is created when lye and water is combined. It's a humectant and emollient that helps products spread better, and keeps products from drying out, even when the consumer leaves the cap off, since it draws moisture to itself. PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate (CroTHIX) - is a patented high performance thickener developed for aqueous surfactant systems. As a complex high molecular weight ester, CROTHIX is truly multi-functional. Not only is it superior as a thickener, but it is also effective as a diethanolamide (DEA) replacement and a mitigator of irritation. As a thickener, CROTHIX is efficient as well as effective, producing substantial viscosity even at low levels. As a (DEA) replacement, the product is a safe alternative providing similar viscosity and foam stabilization. As a mitigator of irritation, it is a viable means of lowering the irritancy potential of the surfactant system itself. What's more-CROTHIX requires no neutralization, forms no nitrosamine byproducts, and works especially well in clear systems. With CROTHIX, formulators can create mild, rheologically balanced shampoos, body washes, shower gels, liquid soaps or other soap based systems and offer products that are free of DEA and substantially less irritating. Given the Industry's focus on mildness, CROTHIX can be of great benefit in both skin care and hair care, in that the product has been shown to actually lower the potential for skin irritation in surfactant-based systems. New data we have generated suggests that CROTHIX has mitigating effects that help reduce the irritation potential of surfactant or surfactant blend systems. It is derived from vegetable based stearic acid, which is naturally occurring in fats and oils. Allantoin - I absolutely love this stuff and put it in everything I can get it into, basically everything except my soap. :-) INTRODUCTION:: Allantoin has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Over-the-Counter (OTC) Topical Analgesic Review Panel as a Category I (safe and effective) active ingredient skin protectant. Allantoin has been widely used for decades in cosmetic and OTC topical formulations because it is so effective. The most popular applications are in the prevention and treatment of dry and chapped skin and lips. Allantoin is a free flowing white powder, derived from Comfrey. KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS:: Soaps, detergents, acidic or alkaline materials, mechanical means or the environment can irritate skin and lips. Allantoin helps alleviate and prevent symptoms of irritated and dry skin, and dry and chapped lips. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the Tentative Monograph, 48 Federal Register 6820-33 defines Allantoin as a skin protectant. A skin protectant is a drug which protects injured or exposed skin or mucous membrane surfaces from harmful or annoying stimuli. The FDA has approved the use of 0.5% to 2.0% Allantoin for the: .. Temporary protection of minor cuts, scrapes, burns and sunburns. .. Prevention and temporary protection of chafed, chapped, cracked, or wind-burned skin and lips. .. Relief of dryness and softening of cold sores and fever blisters. .. Treatment and prevention of diaper rash and to help protect/seal out wetness. MODE OF ACTION:: Allantoin produces its desirable effects by promoting healthy skin. It is postulated that Allantoin cleanses away necrotic tissue, speeding up the growth of new, healthy tissue. Since Allantoin stimulates new and healthy tissue growth, healing epithelization may take place. Allantoin also has been described as a cell proliferant, an epithelization stimulant and a chemical debrider in texts such as the United States Dispensatory, Merck Index, and British Pharmaceutical Codex. Allantoin is also used in the topical pharmaceutical market in psoriasis medications and analgesic gels. Allantoin has been used in various dental preparations such as toothpastes and oral rinses. Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate - Derived from an amino acid (Glycine), Suttocide A offers the benefits of a water soluble preservative as well as neutralizing agent for acids/acrylic polymers. Having a pH of 10-12, Suttocide can be used to raise the pH of formulations while adequately preserving them, thereby allowing the formulator to eliminate the need for the use of auxiliary alkali in the formulation. It's reasonable cost and low usage rate also make it a desirable ingredient for personal care and cosmetics.
