Guest guest
Hi Jane I'm sorry to hear about your son's troubles. A change in diet can really do a number on people. Is it possible that he doesn't tolerate some of the more common GFCF ingredients, like rice? Have you introduced other foods that are new to your son? Headaches are often related to food intolerance issues for us. Do you have him on enzymes at all? We saw more improvement after we put our son back on wheat and dairy, once we had enzymes in place for a while. GFCF is actually not the best choice for may kids. If you want a different take on special diets, you could look in the file section of this group. There's a file by Andy Cutler that can be helpful with sorting out if GFCF is the best choice for you, or if other diets might be more appropriate. The formatting makes it hard to read, but you could paste it onto another page. How much DHA are you giving? take care René > > Now we are GF/CF again in preparation for chelation. Guest guest
Hi Jane I see you've been directed to the group. That's good. If you want more excellent enzyme info, try www.enzymestuff.com . It's put together by the moderator of the enzymes group, and has information about getting started with enzymes (go slow!) and what you might expect when you start. For what it's worth, we've had much more success with Houston enzymes than Kirkmans. This seems quite common, though there are always exceptions. One thing that comes to mind from what you've written is that there may be issues with food additives. If you're not yet doing so, I'd encourage you to think about using organic products. Headaches can also be a common reaction to MSG, which now goes under dozens of different names, sometimes including harmless-sounding things like " natural flavoring " . Message # 169571 would be a good start if you want to research the MSG angle further. If this is all stuff you already know and look out for, I apologize :-). I give my son about the same amount of DHA as you, plus a bunch of EPA, so that doesn't seem unreasonable. However just to be on the safe side, you might want to post a seperate question about the DHA. Others know more than I do about efa's, and they can affect brain function in all sorts of ways. take care René > > He is extremely restricted in the foods that he eats, so we are stuck with different hot dogs (turkey and chicken), GF/CF chicken nuggets and special french fries. He has been eating all of that before. One culpit that I found was the ketchup. My son consumes massive amounts of ketchup (even dipping green peas in it, yuk!). Now we are using the gluten-free ketchup. > > I am still waiting for all the supplements to get here and enzymes will definitely be a must. > I am supposed to give him 700mg DHA, but I only had 500mg capsules so I am giving him one in the morning and one at night. Could that be too much and causing the headaches? > Jane >

Great! > I was so not ready for this kind of reaction. It still blows me away that food can be such a culpit. Amazing, isn't it? > I am supposed to start the B12 tomorrow. Do you think I should wait until I get this diet stuff under control? I really want to be able to chart reactions to each thing introduced, but on the other hand I don't want to wait if it can benefit him now. I would wait until you get this straightened out. B12 can also cause mischief, and you need to know what's what. > Ugh, this is all so confusing to me. It is, isn't it? Let us know how things go. It can be adjustment from the food removals, new foods he is now eating that cause headaches for him [nitrates and MSG do this for me], yeast in his head [nasty stuff!] or several other things. > What can I do for him - I am worried about possible casein in the > chewable motrin. Give enzymes, that can help with possible food issues. I use HNI enzymes with great success, altho I still need to avoid nitrates and MSG http://www.houstonni.com/ Dana

Guest guest
> I am supposed to start the B12 tomorrow. Do you think I should wait until I get this diet stuff under control? Yes, best to wait. B12 caused problems for my kids until I learned they needed a lower dose and always with folic acid. Plus, it did increase yeast for my kids. You only want to have to figure out one thing at a time. Dana

Guest guest
> > Thank you Dana. how much folic acid is recommended and is there a special brand I can go with? I gave 800mcg-1600mcg with the mB12. I have recently discovered that giving LOTS MORE folic acid than that [they are now fully B12 loaded, so I no longer give that] causes LOTS of language, moreso than the B12 caused! > Today there has been no headache so I think the worst is over. It sure was a horrible 3 days! Glad the headache is gone! Dana
