Guest guest
Speaking as a mother of a teenager (and a preteen), I am glad they are not making it easy for them to get ahold of the cold meds to get high. Yes Iknow there are also other things such as inhalants. This is a very difficult time in their lives. I cannot imagine if my child took a bunch and died and someone said this to me " THis is crazy, shoot just make all drugs legal and let the dumb stupid druggies kill themselves. If they want to act dumb then fine less stipid people in the world. AUGH. " Purely devistating. Shaye
Guest guest
Well, I can see what she was saying and that is the opinion of a lot of people (not mine however), but i think generally that type of thinking is more about the adults out there who are killing themselves with drugs who should know better. One sometimes forgets that children / teenagers do incredibly stupid things and there are any number of disreputable and downright evil people who do take advantage of that fact. So, just as we did when they were small, we as parents, still have to watch over and try to protect our children from themselves and those who would prey on them. And, sometimes it is reassuring to know that we are not the only ones who are trying their darndest to protect them too. It certainly does impinge on others rights to a certain extent, but it's sort of like when you grounded your kids from an activity or something important and then had to deprive yourself of something so you could stay home with them while they were grounded. Not much fun for you, but you had to inconvenience yourself to teach your child something. Many years ago, more than I care to admit, my Rebekah (now 29), took the deodorizing cake that was in the top of the diaper pail out and stuck it in her mouth. How she got it out is beyond me as it was supposedly child proof. But, after rinsing her mouth out a million times and making sure she hadn't ingested any (a nice new smooth cake with no pieces missing), I called the Dr and he said, " Children will try any number of ways to try and kill themselves. " It always struck me as a very funny, true and scary thing to say. Guest guest
Well, yes I was mainly speaking of the adults out there but also kids too if suppose. If instead of taking things away from the world the-- world should instead say here, this is what youve got. Yes this is medicine for colds and coughs but it could also be used as a drug since it is technically a drug. And since it is a drug if you use it not according to how it is prescribed then many bad things canhappen. For one you can die. and two if I will kill you myself if you do it and many other not so good things will happen to you. Then let the child make their own descision. If a person has raised a pretty decent child and taught them to repect not only themselves and their freinds and family but also life in general then the person will learn to make the right desicions. Of course the person does need to grow up with a good sense of self esteme and a decent sense of self. Granted i am unsure if I had much self esteam growing up but I know there i never once did i even think of doing any type of drugs or smoking nore have I ever gotten drunk. No way would I put not only myself but those i care about in that type of position. I could have if i wanted to but I didn't. I have also noticed that the more you take something away from a person the more curious it makes them. Everyone will want to try and get there hands on things just out of curiosity. people are like " ok well they won't let people just go in and buy cough meds anymore cause supposibly people get high, ok lets go and give it a try. see what it really does " If they just leave it on the shelf for anyone to get then obviously it isn't that big a deal and no one would think anything differant. Sure everyone might think Im a moron and totally niave but all i know is that if you really do go and say " look this is what this does and if you still want to do it just know..... and also know that we wil all be very disapointed and you arn't only hurting yourself but everyone else who cares about you. " then see what the person goes and does. In most cases the person will make the right desicion. But obviously we don't live in a world of trust and don't think people can make proper decisions. Which is a shame. No way am I saying that children need to get high and die. Guest guest
I don't think legislation is the answer here. For one thing, consider how many things can be abused. What if all of it were taken away? The newest I've heard about is those cans of compressed air that is used to clean off your keyboard or blow dust out of your computer. Kids have died using it. Check out this link for more information: http://www.snopes.com/toxins/dustoff.asp. There are solutions, but they aren't fast or easy. Our society and the politicians are happy with applying band-aids, so we have restrictions on cold medicine, can't get lye in the stores, may not be able to pick up a six pack of beer or a bottle of wine if my teen aged son or daughter is with me (I might be buying it for them), need ID to get a can of shaving cream (no 17 year old shaves?), can't bring nail clippers on vacation with me if I'm flying (they might be weapon), and so on and so on. Guest guest
Well I understand where your comming from; but I remember a particular parent saying to me come on take it it taste yummy!! Or you have to take it to feel better; and when a person is down and out on there luck and not thinking clearly, they turn to drugs and alcohol thinking it will help and all it does is numb them for what a minute!! Yeah if they do it knowingly they deserve the out come BUT there are thousands of children out there whom are forced and or pressured to do drugs or alcohol, and soon they will be changing mouth washes as well as many house hold products because they find a high in almost anything!! eg: Mouth washes, aresoals(sp), Cough syrups, cold medicines, Whippit cartridges (whip cream cans), Gasoline; the list can go on for miles. So our government is trying to prevent this from happening; but they don't jump when a person call to report an adult liquiring up teens on New Years eve, especially when one child was there own!! <~~~ This is my experience. Then strain through small seive. I give her a couple tablespoonfuls mixed in some cola every hr or so. I poured the rest into a ceiled glass container for the fridge for storage. I used dried herbs perchased from health food co-op here in town. I mean to tell ya she hasn't coughed but 2 episodes (suspected pertussis, btw) all day and those episodes were very mild compared to her typical. Since going to bed and refusing to take any for about 3 hrs her coughing is back, so I tend to believe it is the tonic making a difference for her. Just an FYI for ya, Debi 's Little Sister ISBN 1-4137-1724-1 www.debityree.com Some have said the autism pandemic is because of better reporting. Let's all thank God California's 2 year autism decline must mean that they are back to incompetent reporting. If you go to the doctor, they might prescribe herbs for your problem and then you buy them in pharmacy (but in our pharmacies you don't need an Rx for most drugs). Anyway, I know aniseed and licorice are frequently used in cough medicines. Also, another one that is used for cough and all kinds of diseases of the respiratory system is what you call here " Plantago lanceolata " . Boy! This thing brings back memories, because this is the most used syrup (made of this plant) for cough for very small kids, and it was so tasty that sometimes we would fake coughing just so we can take the syrup It has lots of honey in it I am glad your daughter feels better. Guest guest
also if you are not experienced with cough assist not sure if you know you are meant to do 5 breathes of in and out then short break of 10 secs or so then repeat that 5 times, and with me it is often only on the 4 cycle that i acutally feel stuff moving. linda 2008/11/2 Moss <lindajmoss@...> > > > 2008/11/2 Moss <lindajmoss@...> > > i use 40 in and 50 out, if real bad lie on the side which is least >> affected, tipping with head down and also have someone push on my diaphragm >> at same time as coughing out with cough assist. another thing i do is use a >> saline nebuliser or inhale steam before doing cough assist. >> linda >> >> 2008/11/2 Jade Theriault <radiofinger@...> >> >> >>> is it really bad? almost sticky? >>> >>> >>> Jade >>> >>> cough medicine >>> >>> > >>> >>> > How much do you guys take? Guest guest
Hey, The original cold went away. This cough nonsense just hit hard this evening. Will lays on top of me and shoves my diaphragm up, too - but nothing's working this time. I haven't used the nebulizer since '06, so I have NOTHING. Because of some family issues, I can't even call anyone to come stay with the kids so I can go to urgent care.
