Urine porphyrins result-- false negative?

Okay, so we ran the porphyrin test thru Lab Corp. It all came

back negative and it even came back as low in the coproporphyrins.

(result was 5, rr 15-75) Should I assume it was mishandled, or do I

need to rethink my son's mercury status? (we will start chelation

next week) He has no mercury on hair/blood/urine, but high levels of

just about everything else on hair--aluminum, arsenic, antimony, etc,

plus his hair minerals are a holy mess. He meets and exceeds all 3

counting rules by far. He is 5.

I read Andy's posts on how the sample should be handled. They

did give us a light-proof container, but I have no idea if

preservative was added. This same lab has screwed up several other

very basic tests for us before, so I wouldn't be surprised. Also,

they did not measure his creatinine that I can see.

I was looking forward to getting a big fat positive so I could

say

SEE-- THERE'S THE MERCURY!!! For all the people who think I'm nuts

(and for myself , I must admit)

Anyone else get a negative porphyrin but still get mercury out?

Or know anything about LabCorps accuracy with this test??

thanks, Becky

Hi Becky,

***I had a 24hour fractionated urine porphyrins test done at

LabCorp. The specimen was definitely mishandled, but one of the

porphyrins was still elevated. According to Andy, the one elevated

was not clearly diagnostic for anything in particular, but definitely

indicated there was a problem somewhere.

or do I

***The more mercury toxic a person is, the less likely you are to see

elevated mercury levels in hair, etc. (Unless you've had a recent

toxic exposure) If your child met 3 of the counting rules, then

there is a very high statistical probability he is mercury toxic.

***Andy gave me a detailed list of do(s) and don'ts for proper

handling of specimens for testing. If you contact me off list I can

provide you with the document I sent to the local lab which handled

my second specimen. (which was handled properly and came back

negative) My second specimen was sent to the Mayo Clinic. You would

need to find a local lab (a hospital outpatient lab is a good

possibility) that uses Mayo as one of their reference labs and have

your doc write the script for 24hour fractionated urine porphyrins

test at Mayo Clinic.

***Even if the porphyrin test is negative, it does not mean mercury

is not an issue.

If you would like the documents I mentioned above, contact me off

list.

***If the Andy index still exists, you can find more info. there or do

a google search on porphyrins/porphyria/porphyrin testing/etc.

why are you doind

***The results can help to rule out or diagnose toxicity/intoxication,

other liver diseases, and rare genetic conditions.

Anyone else get a negative porphyrin but still get mercury

out?

>>I know of a chap who had negative x 2 at the Paris lab, took ALA, repeated

the test and was off the page for Hg.

My son's hair test showed he was not mercury toxic. His porphyrins showed he

was toxic. Yes, I needed that " I FOUND MERCURY " feeling.

Sometimes we need to make assumptions. There is no accurate way to detect

mercury. The hair test and porphyrins are not always accurate. If a child has

ASD, then its a good assumption they are metal toxic.

Sounds like its time to chelate. When you see ASD symptoms disappear, that's

the proof you need.

Wishing your child the best.

> >I just had one done on my son. this test is very sensitive to

light, so you are supposed to cover the container with aluminum foil

after the cup has been filled with urine to avoid any light exposure.

Light would mess up your results.
