he probably is. I honestly believe that if he were evaluated, and his

past history looked at that he would be diagnosed with Aspbergers in a

heartbeat. Very intelligent, read at a 5th grade level in kindergarten, very

technically inclined, but the lack of social skills is so obvious you can trip

over it. I keep telling my mom she should mention it to him. I don't speak to

him. Maybe there is some help he could be getting in that area while he is in

jail so he could function a little better when he gets out. He's been in and

out his whole life and cannot function out of jail. In jail with the strict

structure and routine he does well sadly, so when he gets out and cannot deal,

he does something to get back to his safe haven.

Kerrie,

Sounds like you've got enough legitimate " biases " . What time do they say you

need to report? Perhaps you could take your son along, saying (accurately, it

seems) you don't have child care (or that you're looking for their childcare

center). Wonder if your brother is mercury toxic...many " self-medicate " with

non-prescription drugs.

So I got a  jury duty notification. As much as I'd love a several day to week

<BR>

or two long  break from my life, I can' t see myself doing it.  Jury duty <BR>

would actually  be interesting and relaxing compared to my days as I'm sure you

<BR>

all  know.<BR>

<BR>

How do I get out of it? There are no excusals, you can only postpone once  <BR>

which I did already.  Hardship/Excuse exemptions " rarely given " according  to

<BR>

them.  What do I do??<BR>

<BR>

I have NO ONE to get from school and watch him until I get home.  No <BR>

one can handle him for more than an hour at a time. Maybe I can take my  chances

<BR>

that my number wont come up. Or go the day I am supposed to report, and  when

<BR>

they interview me I can tell them how my police officer husband had taught  <BR>

me to believe " if they get cuffed they are guilty " and that he distrusts  <BR>

lawyers, my brother is a lifetime heroine addict serving 9-18 in prison for

crimes <BR>

he committed to get drug money, and I'd be too worried about my autistic  son

<BR>

and what care and supervision he is receiving in my absence (all  true).<BR>

<BR>

Just another thing to worry about. Yay<BR>

I had my doctor or Brittany's doctor write me a script saying that due to the

medical DX, I would not be able to be without a cell phone and whatever else was

restricted while on jury duty. I am exempt for life due to this, and all it took

was a script from the doctors and had it faxed over to whomever requested it.

Good luck,

If you decide to gamble on not being called (and you get called),

bring with you and make a plea to the court. They'll let you

go home.

Do you get to phone in to a hotline the night before to see if your

number was called?

Also, wear any T-shirt you have that says the Gov't gave your child

Autism! That'll scare any Prosecutor (tho' defense counsel will be

drooling to have you on their jury!).

Kerrie,

I was called for Jury duty once. My son with autism was a toddler and I

had an infant at the time. I wrote a letter stating I had a disabled

child with autism and an infant and I was the primary care giver. I

received a letter back stating I was excused from Jury duty.

Tell the truth. The truth is good enough. You have a child with special

needs who requires a highly trained person to care for him. You fear

for his safety and you are the only person available. It would be

financially difficult for you to hire someone to watch your child while

you're on Jury duty. Maybe a Doctor's note from your pediatrician should

be sent along with the letter. Just some ideas to throw out to you.

If your child has a diagnosis, and depending on what it is, it may

allow you a deferment. Ask your pediatrician to write a note that

you can fax the jury supervisor at the courthouse.

My doctor wrote a note stating that I was the primary care person for a

child with autism and that I should be excused. I sent it in with the

jury notice and that was that.

Kerrie,

I did case management in Seattle with many (chronically homeless) adults with

long histories of self-medication, various diagnoses, and probable metal

toxicity. I wished I could have arranged for hair tests for a bunch of them,

particularly since we had a staff person and a volunteer who gave free hair

cuts. I think many would have refused figuring the testing was for illegal

drugs and that the management wouldn't have allowed it thinking it too

alternative. Many of the people we served also consider jail and the ER as safe

havens (warm bed, roof, and food).

Do you know if he has any mercury amalgam dental fillings? Perhaps you could

give your mother a copy of either or both of Andy's books (if he's allowed

reading materials) or donate them to the jail library?! I should send a copy of

each of Andy's books to the psychiatrist or nurse at the place where I worked in

Seattle (particularly since that's in Andy's backyard). Maybe somebody from the

agency would go to one of his seminars... I did talk about my mercury poisoning

with the medical staff there and shared copies of the article I had published

about toxic metals (and autism).
