Guest guest
This could be caused by intestinal bleeding or something similar. Some liver diseases could cause this too... It could be serious. If the stool is so dark, it could be that her stomach is bleeding or some other higher part of the digestive tract. Is she taking Pepto-Bismol by any chance? or any Iron supplement? From what you describe I doubt it, but doesn't hurt to ask anyway... I don't want to scare you, because I don't really know what the problem is, but I would take this kid to the doctor, because this could be serious. She needs to determine what causes this color in the stool. Valentina > Hoping someone can give some helpul input. Have a friend with a 3 year old...she has never had a normal stool...not once...showing many signs of being on the spectrum. Anyway, her stool in the morning is now black and tar-like. She described it as the consistency of play-doh, but absolutely black. Later in the day, the little one goes again, only then it's loose, fluffy, yellowy, and acidic. She wakes up 2-3 times a night screaming and then the whole cycle starts all over again. > > Any ideas? Guest guest
Is she giving some source of synthetic iron? Synthetic iron can cause this type of stool. Guest guest
Sadly, this poor child has been going to doctors for years. Tomorrow is her appointment with a 4th " specialist " . The tar poop just started, and they did do a stool test, results pending. Not sure what they tested for. We are all really concerned. I can't imagine that any doctor in their right mind would let this continue for 3 years...constant diarhea, and not do anything. Thanks for the input. Oh, and I know she is not on any iron supps because her mom actually is thinking about putting her on iron because she is so pale. -------------- Original message -------------- From: Valentina Scharpf <val999@...> > This could be caused by intestinal bleeding or something similar. Guest guest
Anyway, her stool in the morning is now black and tar-like. Guest guest
, I agree with Valentina. My little guy had one (and only one) of those once. It just happened to be on a day when Asher ended up in the emergency room for an UNRELATED (is any of this really unrelated?) issue. When the ER doc heard about the black poop, it concerned him enough that he did an x-ray of Asher's belly. Incidentally, the x-ray results (no blockage but signs of inflammation) are what got me on the right track (biomedical). I would be terrified if this had happened more than once to Asher. I would get your friend to get her daughter to the doc and get a stool analysis ASAFP. Anne > > This could be caused by intestinal bleeding or something similar. Guest guest
Just read that the docs aren't helping. Maybe give her (or get her) some enzymes to try? I had a nutritionist I worked with in Chicago (assume your friend is also in the area?). The nutritionist drove me a bit crazy, but she works with an alternative doc. Between the two of them, they got us on the right track (we don't use them anymore, b/c they weren't in the loop on a lot of the stuff I wanted - LDN, etc., but might be a good place to start). If your friends want their names and contact information, let me know. The doc happens to use Doctor's Data for a lot of stuff, which is good. This sounds nasty, hopefully a doctor can determine the cause soon. Here are some ideas: Black pasty bm can mean liver stress issues. Try giving milk thistle, see if that helps. Fluffy and yellow was yeast for my son, and loose and acidic was bad bacteria. Try adding some probiotics. Dana
