5-htp may help with the flapping. It is another precursor to serotonin.

However I can't ignore one other parent's post which said basically -

Flapping = yeast, low on B1 (use Authia).

For speech a lot of people see big improvements with fish oil, and big

regressions when they run out of it. We got a little regression when

we ran out of " Fruit EFA " (we don't use CLO - can't stand the stench

and the boy won't take it).

I wrote here what my son needed for language/speech

B vitamins and anti-virals eliminated this problem for my son.

Do you give a lot of rice now? Rice can be constipating. Try

reducing the rice, maybe add back more wheat with enzymes. My son

improved quite a bit by removing rice and corn, and adding back wheat

with HNI enzymes.

If this is scripting/echolalia, it was folic acid deficiency for my son.

Anti-virals were essential for my son, as well as the things I wrote

on my page link above.

Thanks. The article was very interesting and I learned alot from

it. It may be that by reducing the whole wheat in her diet, I

caused tryptophan to be lowered also which caused flapping, and also

magnesium. I may do just as well by buying some digestive enzymes

and reintroducing whole wheat. 5-htp makes me nervous, based on

what I read (maybe because it was compared to Prozac!). At least by

adding whole wheat back in, it'll help with her new poop issues too.

Thanks again. This helps me put the pieces together. This is one

big puzzle of how all this stuff interacts!

Thanks Dana,

All great suggestions! I thought it through a little and think that

what I might do is..

1) add whole wheat back in, since it has magnesium and may have

contributed to the reduction of tryptophan? It sounds like it's

important for both the hand flapping and pooping regularity. She's

not allergic, so a digestive enzyme could cover any problems if any

that she may have with it.

2) add in a digestive enzyme - but which one? Peptizyde or zyme

prime?

3) Based on your list, although I'm already using some of the

supplements, I'm not using anti-virals like Olive Leaf Extract

(where to get from?) and Vit A (only in her multi-vit).

4) There were alot more supps that you mentioned like IP-6 (what is

it?). You said that major help for language came from EFAs (does

that stand for essential fatty acids? like flax oil??)

Thanks for the response!

Hi dana; how did you use carnosine? did you use the doses Dr. chez

used for his work, 400mg twice a day?. and how long did you used?

The mechanisms by which serotonin becomes more available are completely

different. With 5HTP, you are supplying a seratonin precursor. This method is

generally recognized to have far less potential side effects than SSRI's such

as Prozac. If you decide to supplement 5HTP, start with a low dose, such as

25mg, in the absence of other amino acids. On an empty stomach before

bedtime is a good bet. 5HTP is generally helpful for agressive kids, and kids

that display marked OCD characteristics. Good luck.

Wheat has B vitamins, selenium, and manganese. Not sure about

magnesium, but perhaps. But my son noticeably improved when I added

back wheat with enzymes and removed rice and corn. And he was

severeley deficient in B vitamins and selenium.

I buy OLE at my local health food store. I use Natural Factors brand.

I need to re-word that section. The EFAs and B12 seem to help most

kids, altho they were not as helpful for my son. The list of

supplements AFTER the EFAs and B12 is what helped my son most.

I did use flax oil, but it helped more with behaviors than with language.

I started with 250mg per day and worked up to 500mg per day. It did

tend to increase copper so I gave it with zinc.

I stopped at 500mg per day.

About two months.

Did you have your son tested for a possible allergy to corn? Many kids are

allergic or sensitive. My son seems to have a problem with corn syrup in

particular, yet doesn't seem to react to sugar.

I would definitely continue with the probiotics. I think that they are very

important. I'm currently using Kyo-dophilus. Does anyone out there have a

particular favorite that they recommend?

Many parents try the casein/gluten free diet (dairy/wheat). Anecdotal

evidence from many parents indicates that speech often improves after removal of

dairy products. I give my son flax seed oil capsules, and I think that it

really helps him have much better (calmer) behaviour, as well as helps him with

his skin ( he is apt to get ezcema, hives, etc.). I actually took him to a

dermatologist when he was small, because of the skin problems, and he said that

in his experience, young kids with these problems often have food allergies, and

that I might want to think about taking him to an allergist. I did. The

allergist doesn't believe that food allergies affect behaviour (although, as a

parent, I now have a very strong belief that this is true for my child, and many

other children!), however, he did test as being allergic to many foods.

I also give my son calcium-magnesium tablets (Schiff brand). The flax is

Barleans brand. The local health food stores carry them, but Savemart is the

cheapest place to buy them in my area.

I always show his doctor info about the dosages, etc, and ask him if he

thinks it could be helpful, or if it could be harmful in any way, etc. before I

do a trial of any supplement. If your child is also on meds, be sure to check

if there can be any potential interaction.

Many parents also indicate improvement with B-6 and B-12. I'm not currently

adding them, I just give him a general multi which include them.(Natrol take-

one)

Thanks Carol! I appreciate the input. I've been resisting taking

out dairy because of the benefits (calcium, active yogurt cultures,

and others that I didn't know about previously, like tryptophan, and

who knows what else. I do give her yobaby organic yogurt and

organic milk only. I did have her tested for allergies, and she

came up negative, as I suspected. I never noticed any difference in

behaviors after she ate dairy. I'm willing to try anything at this

point to get her gains in speech, so that's something I should

strongly consider. Although it doesn't seem normal that dairy would

be doing that to her??? (Then again, there's nothing normal about

any of this!!) I'd love to hear some anecdotal support of that

myself.

I've tried rice drink in place of milk on occassion(and no, she

doesn't have allergies to rice or corn), so maybe I'll continue with

that and try goat milk too. If I just take yogurt out too, then

that'll be it for dairy - should be easy, right?

I too started using Barleens flax oil (just 1 tsp, is that enough?)

in her smoothies about 2 weeks ago, without any problems. Prior to

that I was using Coromega.

I use Kirkman probio-gold probiotic. I can't comment on whether

it's better than others, it's just the one that her DAN doctor

recommended.

Thanks again. Take care.
