Re: Is Lead related to mouthing?

I remember having this issue as well. When my son was

tested for lead as an infant, the blood test revealed

nothing, only very low, insignificant amounts to the

doc.

I have tried to explain to the pediatrician and the

health department at the county we live in why the

blood test is not appropriate since it will only show

current or ongoing exposures. After the two weeks the

lead will deposit into body tissues and the brain,

just like mercury. This is what I have found from

various internet resources and seem to make good

sense. My son's hair elelment test was highest on lead

actually...

It seems to me that the health department's official

way of measuring lead levels through blood testing is

a way to really avoid liability for the thousands of

low-income families who live in desperate conditions

in the inner city - lead paint is a serious issue

there. Someone would have to start spending huge

amounts for clean up if they found thousands of

children test high for lead using hair samples...

I do think lead causes mouthing but so does low zinc levels or mercury.

When you say mouthing a lot, how old is the child. Mouthing is normal

up until a certain point. When a child is three and you still find

yourself telling them twenty times a day not to eat the toys..then you

wonder. But a 9 month old should be eating toys.

I am testing my son using a DDI hair test, this will show lead and

mercury as well as anything else that might be wrong. I know that at

his age, he should not be eating everything. Also, some children with

sensory processing issues mouth a lot. This is how they find out about

the world since their visual, auditory or other senses are not doing

the job well.

But yes, lead will show up in the blood. I am not sure for how long it

actually stays in the blood. This test will only say that yes or no

she had some lead. It will not tell how much. I don't think it could

hurt, except that if the child is really young, being stuck in the

finger is not nice. I had to hold my one year old's arm down for this,

and she screamed like the dickens!

Shes 5 years old. My son is going to be 20 years old and still

mouths, He likes keys has his own key chain with a plastic springy,

As long as he has his Keys the only thing he now mouths is that key

chain. Her daughter still puts eveything in her mouth. I think its a

sensory issue.

I am trying to find out if her developmental Ped is doing a hair

test or blood test. I was surprised he ordered the test.

Thanks,

Donna

For my #3, oral/mouthing meant he was eating a food or supplement not

tolerated, or he had a yeast overgrowth issue.

Usually it will show up in the blood, because it likes to maintain an

even balance throughout the body. But I do know some people who were

high lead but it did not show in the blood.

lead and mouthing makes sense to me. i have come to the conclusion that most of

my son's problems are metal related. he has high lead levels and mouths

constantly. he will be 9 yrs old in two wks. been mouthing for years.

My son mouthed horribly for a while, in fact, until we brought down

lead (per hair test, it never showed up in his blood) and upped his

zinc. We no longer see much mouthing, which is really a relief.
