Are going to start Houston Enzymes, Three Lac and some other good stuff but, he wants to rx. a low dose of Clonidene - son wakes during the night and sleeps very, very little. Rx-ing up to 1mg at night - can start low and build up. I've been on the web for about 40 min and have found very little info on this. I will do rx drugs when necessary but am very, very cautious... can anyone tell me anything about this??? Guest guest
We used clonidine for a few years as well, just a very low dose (0.1 to 0.2, if I remember right). I was told by my DAN that it's actually a heart medication (again, if I'm remembering right), but it was supposed to be very safe and it worked quite well. We used it for almost 2 years with no side effects that I was aware of. With melatonin, less is more - you may have been giving too much melatonin - you need to start with a very small amount 0.5 to 1mg, more will actually have the opposite effect. -------------- Original message -------------- From: Meade <jenniferdmeade@...> Hi Again, Yes, we have tried melatonin and unfortunately it did nothing... Guest guest
, The spelling is clonidine so a search with that spelling might bring up more info. Might make sense to try melatonin before trying clonidine. S S <tt> Went to our DevPed yesterday. Guest guest
How's his diet? Does he wake up at the same time each night? Does he have hypersensitive hearing? (My nephew woke up at the same time each early morning for a while before they figured out he was hearing the neighbor's alarm clock ringing through closed windows). Is he already on other supplements? S S Hi Again,<BR> <BR> Yes, we have tried melatonin and unfortunately it did nothing... We even gave up to 5mg... Guest guest
We have a prescrip for clonidine given to us by our DAN dr. Our son, who's 6, goes to bed with no problem, but always wakes way too early and is a restless sleeper. We've not used it yet b/c we've been trying to get to the root of what's causing it or we've been trying (to no avail) to deal with his sleeplessness via a natural route. We also took him to a sleep specialist and finally requested a sleep study to rule out any thing physical. Come to find out that it showed him to have a mild sleep apnea. His oxygen levels drop at an average of 6Xs an hour and each time he arouses. So we're going to see an ENT to see if he needs his tonsils/adnoids out. The sleep specialist seems to feel that is the issue to his wakings. He told us NOT to use the clonidine b/c his body is doing something to compensate for not being able to get enough air. So, maybe it might be worth exploring this avenue. I NEVER thought this would be a possibility. But in some ways it makes sense with his restlessness and he's made progress in all areas w/ the supplements/therapies EXCEPT this area where he's made none. Hope this helps. Are going to start Houston Enzymes, Three Lac and some other good stuff but, he wants to rx. a low dose of Clonidene - son wakes during the night and sleeps very, very little. This is commonly caused by food intolerance, especially phenol intolerance, and also by yeast overgrowth http://www.danasview.net/phenol.htm http://www.danasview.net/yeast.htm >>I will do rx drugs when necessary but am very, very cautious... Try the enzymes and/or some other naturals first. Then, if the sleep still does not improve, you can consider the rx medication. Guest guest
Try doing a search spelling it as " clonadine " and you'll find quite a bit of info. It was used quite a bit for AS kids when my son was first diagnosed about 12 years ago but I haven't heard of it being used much with AS kids recently. It's approved for treating high blood pressure and is used off-label for focus and hyperactivity. I don't know a lot about the drug but it seems like there would be better options to try first if sleep is the only issue you're trying to address. Guest guest
-Hi, I just wanted to add that my daughter does the enzymes and Three Lac but still needs help with sleep. She has taken a very small dose of clonidine for the last 5 years with no problems. It has been a life saver for all of us. It has been around for a very long time. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hello, I saw this about the clonidine. and thought I will feel you in, my son has been on clonidine for a very long time i assume probably around 3years old. when he started not sleeping thru the night or if he was alittle older but anyway. not sleeping thru the night and tried giving him at that time benedryl because help with his allergies. and cause drowsiness. that help for alittle bit then didn't work at all. I was burning out of n sleep. and he was too. so they put him on clonidine. 0.1mg. he takes a whole one at night and take a half of it in the morning. I will have to say it has helped alot. but there times for me, he will sleep few hours then he is awake. for a couple of hours then around 6 or 7 am he would go back to sleep by that time , time to get up and get ready for school. still today he is 10 now. and still sometimes will wake up in the middle of the night. and won't sleep. but way less when he was not on the clonidine. just keep an eye on his blood pressure. and Please DO NOT Stop it cold turkey, you will have to wean him off very slowly. i did that a year ago around xmas holidays. and tried herbal sleep pills on the counter. he could not take any sleeping pills on the counter due to the ingredient would interefere with the aricept. but tried the something called allura herbal sleeping rememdy , suppose to calm you down and help you get to sleep. didnt' work and smelled really bad. so then i had to put him back on it. and Dan healthpractioner who is not my son doctor but was willing to talk to me and give me some advice. she told to order Sleep Is Gold, and ADD-up (hyperactivity) and potassium lithium, which i won't use on him he does not have behavioral problems. I will soon be ordering Sleep is Gold and ADD-Up both are19.99 a bottle big bottle couldn't tell u how many ounces. but that is not a bad price. Waiting to get order it. then wean him off clonidine again and see if sleep is gold will work as good as the clonidine. those supplements you can get them thru. www.WorldhealthMall.com if that don't work i will put him back on it. but yes, my son is still on the clonidine and just last thursday he went to spend the night with his granddad and his dad. and they told me he did not sleep at all. he did not go to sleep until friday afternoon around 2pm and slept a couple of hours. I believe it was one of the enzymes i gave him that interefered . could have been no -fenol. but not sure. but slept well last night. So I just wanted to put in my two cents since my son has been on clonidine for a long time. check make sure when he sees the doctor make sure they keep an eye on his blood pressure. and please do not completely stop the medicine it is very dangerous to do that. it was dramatically dangerously blood pressure will drop or dangerously rise sky high, so it can go either way. I wish you luck and you will be sleeping better and so your child will be too. ifyou do decide to take him off. it you will need to slowly wean him or her off very slowly. nancyannette johahna <johahna@...> wrote: -Hi, I just wanted to add that my daughter does the enzymes and Three Lac but still needs help with sleep. Guest guest
My son had a huge sleep problem. And a doctor put him on clonidine for sleep but it would only put him to sleep not keep him sleeping so she then added chloral hydrate along with it. Although it worked like a charm I didn't like him being on those. So we finally got him off of those and started melatonin which worked not quite as good at the rx drugs but better then not sleeping at all. And now he goes to sleep on his own without anything.
