Guest guest
are you thinking off getting pregnant to help your MS just remember the baby and all the year of growing up or are you expecting said child to help you with your MS as it gets worse there is a trial into why pregnancy helps lyn [low dose naltrexone] MS: LDN vs Pregnancy I've heard so much about how much better women with MS usually feel when pregnant! I'm wondering if there are any women out there (specifically those who have had great results with LDN) that can share with me how the LDN improvement compares with the pregnancy improvement. I mean, so many have reported increased energy and improved mood along with a decrease in symptoms after being on LDN. Is that similar to the good improvements reported due to pregnancy or is it a whole different thing? Beach Get a FREE AOL Email account with 2GB of storage. Guest guest
Hi The improvements during pregnancy are caused by high levels of estriol the preganancy estrogen (not to be confused with estridiol) There is a study at UCLA going on under Dr Rhonda Voskuhl where they are giving doses of estriol to women with ms and finsing similiar dcreases in symptoms like in pregancy. I noticed with my first pregancy (girl) I felt great all my symptoms fatigue, spasicity went away. I tried estriol in the dose 8mg daily(compunding pharm) that Voskuhl suggested recently and i must admit I didn't feel anywhere as great. Dr Perlmutter www.renegadeneurologist.com uses 3 o4mg daily on some of his patients In the studies all most all of the lesions shrunk or disappeared inMRi with estriol. Ldn is supposed to up the immune response which is much different. Unquestionably anything that reduces inflammation is super helpful. Oh a happy effect of estriol (not estriodol or mare urine estrogen) is that it seems to reduce breast cancer incidence unlike a lot of the other estrogens used in america for hormone replacement therapy Also the second phase of Voskuhl's study is in conjuction with copaxone (probably because that was the only way they got huge funding). Guest guest
Actuallly the incidence of exacerbation afte having the baby is very very high as the estriol levels drop. Guest guest
Barbara, Hi and thanks for your reply. I've read about natural hormones and also of the effect of estriol on MS. (Mare urine is a whole separate topic that I could go off about!) I appreciate you sharing your experiences, though I'm sorry to hear that taking supplemental estriol didn't give you good results. I realize LDN works in a completely different way but I just wondered if the net effect, or how the improvement feels, was similar to when you're pregnant. Someone posted a reply asking if I was thinking of becoming pregnant. Actually my daughter is the one with MS and she's hoping to start a family soon. However, it's NOT just to improve her MS! Thanks for the good information, Barbara. I didn't realize they were doing the study's second phase with Copaxone. That frustrates me. Also, I'll have to check out Dr. Perlmutter's site. How are you doing currently? Beach
Guest guest
Beach,I am huge lover of children! I've had six myself and if I could have, I would have loved to have had more. Even the thought of adoption rolls through my mind from time to time. Just remind your daughter that it is hard/difficult/challenging/wonderful to have babies and small children and it may be difficult taking care of them and having MS at the same time. I guess my encouragement to her is NOT to not have children, but to make sure she has a good support system in place before she undertakes such a huge life change. Hopefully, if you are geographically close you can help her, but is her husband supportive? does she have a close network of girlfriends with small children? if she goes to church, will they offer her assistance when she needs it? All things to think through...in my humble opinion Chrisie>> Barbara,> Hi and thanks for your reply. I've read about natural hormones and > also of the effect of estriol on MS. Guest guest
Hi again actually am doing pretty well. I look great healthy etc. The LDn gave me excellent energy and I still sleep well and the heat doesn't bother me. my biggest complaint is tightness in my feet and calves especially the right. This comes and goes sometimes I'm walking great sometimes hobbling and off balances. I also notice that my spasicity /tightness reduces amazingly or disappears during my mestrual cycle for 4-7 days but no one else seems to understand this. Ask if your daughter notices any changes during the month .. I reaally thought the ldn would get rid of the tightness but it's actually worse. I got an email saying that they had this experience but after 3 months it improved greatly so i figure I'll give it a try since I've only been taking it for close to a month. I take B1 shots daily helps alot lot of vit c,multi b, lots of d,e, and gluthathione iv all of which help. y ind is super quick thank god Most people been think I'm healthy as a horse unless I'm wobbling about. I had two children but I think I might continues estriol after pregnancy to aaoid any exacerbation. I also am thinking of doing a lower dose of estriol 3 or 4 mg Best of luck with your daughter! Guest guest
Great to hear that you're doing well. I SO want to encourage you to not give up hope! I realize there are no guarantees and that symptom reduction isn't the main goal of LDN, but hang in there! My daughter saw improvements far beyond the first month! She usually can associate more problems with her mentrual cycle, not improvements. I'm not sure I've yet heard of someone like that! Is it way too simplistic of an idea to suggest soaking your feet in Epsom Salts when stiff like that? It helps in regular situations, I wonder if anyone has tried it for periodic spasticity. I know it's not the same thing so probably not a sound idea. (Not that you'd have time anyway with two kids!) I don't know if you've tried Ativan, but it was a godsend to my daughter with her spasms, stiffness, and even some sensory symptoms when she was at her worst. That was before LDN. Now she doesn't use anything at all. Thanks for the good wishes. All the best to you and your family. Beach
Guest guest
Chrisie, Thanks so much for that wonderul email! Congrats on six kids! Did you have them after you knew you had MS or before? You were very encouraging - I'll pass that on! My daughter is determined to have a family regardless of the difficulties. I am close by and will help when needed (or when wanted)! She actually does have a network of close friends with kids and a good church home. Her husband is very supportive as well and even though they're young I can tell he'll be very involved and helpful. She's really in an excellent place support- wise and her faith in Christ is solid. I hope you're doing well. How long have you had MS? Do you take LDN? Thanks again.
