Guest guest
Hi Margaret, Thanks for the speech tips! Landon got a good report yesterday. The speech therapist said that she was really impressed with his babbling, imitating and interactions. She said that he was making more sounds for his age than any child with DS that she had worked with. I was so proud! Landon has more delays in the gross motor area than any other area so it was great to see that communication appears to be a strength at this time. I hope it continues. By the way, what part of NC are your husband's parents from. We live right on the border of NC and SC. Actually, I do most of my shopping in Laurinburg, NC. It is only about 15 miles away. mom to Landon (DS) and Ashton - 15 months --- greysean <greysean@...> wrote: > Hi , > > It really is difficult to travel with twins - > especially young ones. Guest guest
All children are different! Vinnie (DS) can say just about as many words as Sloan. Maybe not as clear but he tries.I more concerned with Sloan not talking much. They can say about 10 words. We do use some sign language and our own made up signs, but they can and do get their point across. ~,moma to (DS) & Sloan {23 months}
Guest guest
Carol, I'm so thrilled for you & Trisha (I'm also jealous!). The only speech we get through the school is a SLP who consults to the Spec. Ed. teacher about twice a year! The last consultation suggested that we try photos with Steph. We see a SLP privately (very expensive- insurance covers some of it) & she is also using photos with Steph with some success. I'm hoping we can move from photos to PECS pretty soon. Once again, I'm so happy for you, especially since you were a bit apprehensive about the school when you first moved!

Guest guest
The political action group I referred to in my letter, is really the 50 Alaskans I have in a separate email group. I'm actually, in fact, creating another one between all the groups I'm in along with those who signed the letter and want to be either in the " general " group or " political " group. So most of you are really getting most everything, I think. Thanks for being interested! (Actually it really means a lot because each time I send out an email another person asks to get off my list! Guest guest
, Request a speech evaluations through the school. They probably did (should have done) one at three. Have someone go over it with you snd ask them what their recommendations are. If you can't get the school to do it, ask why. You can also get a private one done and take the reccomendations to the school. Have them put in writing why your child does not qualify for speech therapy and then start with your state sept of ed, special education office. They should be able to help you. Hopefully it will not go that far. Good Luck! mom to Bridget, 8 ds Hansen6mom@... wrote: Has anyone got any novel approaches to obtaining speech for their child? Guest guest
Hang in there. My daughter Nikki 4 1/2 months old was in hosppital for viral pneumonia. And then that cleared up really good and she just had brochiallitous. She was on oxygen all the time. They tried lowering it and she would have to go back up on it too. Since I lived 65 miles from home to the hospital, the dr. allowed me to bring Nikki home and stay on oxygen. We got home Sat. and just today took her back to the dr. and they took her off oxygen because she was doing fine breathing on her own. I know at the hospital, I was so nervous and wanted Nikki breathing on her own. It seemed like a forever wait. I thought maybe she would be on oxygen forever. But she came through. I will keep him in our prayers. That starts the timeline they have to complete the evaluations and present you with the results. Once school has completed their evaluation, they will hold an IEP meeting to go over the results. If you wish to obtain an independent evaluation, request it at this meeting and they will give you guidance on how to obtain one at their expense. Otherwise, you may submit to the team an independent evaluation you obtained on your own (at any meeting) ... BUT the school system is only required to CONSIDER independent evaluations. If you find that the independent evaluation differs from the school evaluations, you would have the basis for pushing forward with whatever mechanism your state regs allow to protest the school's lack of services. Guest guest
This is illegal . You need to request a speech evaluation and speech therapy for your child. Do this in writing and send it certified mail with receipt to the school system. GEEZ I hate people who try stuff like this. Guest guest
I would recommend that you get him looked at for Oral Motor therapy. If your current speech person is doing this but no results are being found. Switch but discuss with them. It is common for our kiddos to have relaxed muscles in the face and to have problems with speech as far as having the thought to say dadda and getting their mouths to function at the same time... Guest guest
WOW Helen, My son is in a social skills class and a child there always takes off. an adult chasing after him. My son and another boy both have the same concerns. (boundary issues), another child is very quiet. at no time were any of these children punished for inappropriate behaviors. instead, the social skill leader worked with them through pic's and social stories. the pic's were of the kids in the group. the group wrote the word stories to go with the pics. was awesome. each child loves the class and the boy that always took off is now staying in the classroom. *ask her (teacher) for a resume and include where and how much training she has in autism. If she's not trained in autism, request another CSE meeting and request for a person trained in autism to work with your son.Helen Elder <Bigshoelder@...> wrote: I have been struggling with what to do in response to my son’s experience in his speech/social skills class. They are assigned to bring in a mystery object. The others ask questions and try to guess what is in the bag. My son did not want them to guess correctly and mislead them. The teacher's response was that he lied, broke the rules and had to sit out the remainder of the class. I am not trying to be a "helicopter mom", but I have concerns that none of the staff has training about Asperger Syndrome. Although my son has a great vocabulary, we find that he is about where 3-5 year olds are in groups and social settings. What would you all do? He was humiliated and I do not believe he learned anything from this experience except not wanting to be a part of this group. What would you all do? Guest guest
It may need to be addressed as an IEP Team. I would definitely make sure whoever is running the "group" has training in social skills and Asperger's. Pam :)See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. Guest guest
Is the TMG in addition to the vitamins from brainchild? the spectrum support II lists 100 mg of TMG. I like the ingredients list on Brainchild, I've never looked into it before. I was thinking of switching to Nordic naturals. maybe when I order again. we have an expensive supplement habit as I'm sure everyone on this list can relate to. I think you're on to something with the vitamin e. those links didn't work for me but I googled it and got an article that mentioned liver bile. Both my boys have issues there. And I checked and I'm only supplementing about 8%. hmm.. thank you!! > > We've seen great results with the Brainchild Nutritionals. > > > > Also, we use the nordic naturals brand of CLO, which kind are you using? > > > > I noticed you haven't tried Vit E yet - lots of folks have seen success with > this particular one: > > http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/file.asp?xs=0B247E5CC05E4A2D939D1A66C09087 > F3 > <http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/file.asp?xs=0B247E5CC05E4A2D939D1A66C0908 > 7F3 & PID=1005 & CID= & CPID=806> & PID=1005 & CID= & CPID=806 > > > > Also, some kids do well on DMG, others TMG, so I would give the TMG a try. > > > > Hope this helps! > > > > > speech > > May I ask you all what improved or brought about speech in your kids? > My 4 year old improved after epsom salts and gfcf diet but my 2 year > old still isn't speaking. Guest guest
Yes, the TMG would possibly be in addition to the brainchild dose - it depends on the dose your child needs. I would start off with the brainchild, then after you're on the full dose, then possibly add more if needed. On the Vit E - this one specifically from Vitamin World: Natural E-400 d-alpha tocopheryl softgels It is product #000540 on their website. I can totally relate to the pricy supplement budget, what I could do with that extra money every month!
