Theres a group just for young kids and their teeth and dental issues. Theres a

Ped Dentist who answers questions on a daily basis. There are also Hygienists

and lots of parents who have BTDT. GA(gen'l anesthesia) is only used in a

hospital setting. I've never heard of Chloral Hydrate being used by dentists,

its been used for my daughter when she has sleep-deprived eeg's. My apraxia

daughter has never had GA at the dentist and never had any issues with nitros

oxide. She's had GA for surgery many times.

My son is now 11 - apraxia, global dyspraxia, hypotonia, sensory integration

dysfunction, and now epilepsy and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.  Before

the epilepsy diagnosis this past October, he would use triazalam (I think that's

what the med was) for dental work - and they'd still have to papoose him!  He'd

take the med about an hour before, by the time we got to the dentist (fantastic

dentist with specialty in special needs kids), he'd be drowsy.  Doc was great -

worked quickly with as little noise as possible.  By the time the appt was

over, Josh would be sleepy and then konk out for a good nap while whatever pain

there may have been would subside. Now with the epilepsy, though, I don't think

the triazalam is going to be able to be used (makes kids too sleepy and with him

on an anti-epileptic med it probably could be dangerous! - will have to check

with neurodoc on that one).  And, he's gotten so big he won't fit in the

papoose any

longer!  Next dental appt could be pretty interesting!  ;-o!

I just spent a couple hours going through the archives looking for info on

anesthesia for our kids and found a lot of good stuff, but I just wanted to

clarify a few things if anyone can help.

My daughter is apraxic and 3 years, 3 months old. She also has mild hypotonia

resulting in fine and gross motor delays. She has some tooth decay that I'm

concerned about. I know that if I bring her to the dentist they will recommend

repair under anesthesia.

Questions:

I get that nitrous oxide is bad, but is it only bad if she already has a B12

deficiency?

The " -aine " drugs are bad .. does that include lidocaine, which seems so

standard in dental procedures?

Chloral hydrate .. Ok, or not ok?

Anyone out there whose apraxic child has had dental work, what kind of

anesthesia were they under?

Thank you!

Thanks for the replies and the link to that group. As for how extensive

her dental problems are, I really don't know yet. I took her to our regular

dentist because that's the hoop I needed to jump through in order to get a

referral to a pediatric dentist (we have a pain in the butt HMO). He basically

looked in her mouth for 10 seconds while she screamed and fought and said yes,

he sees decay just like I do, and gave me the referral. We haven't seen the

pediatric dentist yet. My daughter is so scared of any kind of medical

situation I honestly don't know how anyone is even going to look at her mouth

without sedation.

Basically, I can see that her front teeth are decaying, probably from bottles

(which she doesn't get anymore except with water).
