Hi! Sorry I had not yet posted a reply---my clinic has been very busy

lately!

You want the hole to be visible. That is a good thing. You can use

scissors and disinfect them w/soap and rubbing alcohol first. You just snip

in an X across the tip. The idea is that your child will realize (either by

sight or feel) that it is “broken” and not working the same way. Thus he is

not getting the same input from it. So the goal is for him to discard it on

his own. The key is NOT to rescue the child and “fix” the paci---hide ALL

the other ones (where he can’t find them). Just play dumb when he shows it

to you as if to say “I don’t know what is wrong with it either”

Since this is a big change for a child, it’s important to make sure that

he/she has all the other pieces in place for getting to sleep at night which

may include: soft music playing in the bedroom (classical, Hawaiian…), a

“lovey”=stuffed animal, maybe a favorite blanket, and maybe a night light.

Also, I’ve used “monster spray” = Bath & Body Works scented body spray---or

plain water in a spray bottle. It helps my dtr when she has a bad dream.

The other impt key is NOT to back down or give in once you decide that you

and your child are ready to discontinue pacifiers. IF you do, then your

child will know that he/she can get the paci back and will put up a stronger

fight.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Warmest wishes,

Barbara
