Guest guest
At that age I was giving my daughter 2 ProEFA tablets a day. I now give her a teaspoon a day of Ultimate Omega liquid from Nordic Naturals. It is flavored with natural lemon. She has made huge gains since making this change. And FYI, my daughter started talking after giving her EFAs and that was after trying speech therapy. It does help! [ ] Supplements for my 2 year son After reading the book " Late Talker " , I asked my pediatrician about giving my son supplements at his well visit, to help him with delays in gross motor and speech. She told me that they would not make a difference and give him a 1/2 of a Flintstone vitamin tablet each day. After reading the posts of success with supplements, I am still motivated to learn more but need direction. I have heard of the brand Nordic Naturals as a " good " supplement but then what type (fish oil only or combination) and will it be too much given with the Flinstone vitamin. I hate to depend on the person working the counter at the vitamin store but have heard so many opinions, some of which contradict, whats a mom to do? Thanks! Guest guest
My son's speech therapist recommended the fish oil supplements and I spoke to my pediatrician aobut it and she said absolutely not. I don't know what to do either. His speech pathologist recommends Toddler DHA and the brand is Spectrum Essentials. I am not sure if I should ignore pediatricians advise. I agree with you how do we know what to do when getting conflicting advice? Guest guest
Hi , I know people hate when I say this but it's my opinion....what should you do? Find another pediatrician! I mean come on- I can understand not yet knowing about the importance of essential amino acids (all of them) daily as they are still in the rat and mice study phase in many cases with leading university medical and neuroscientists...but fish oil?!!! You'd have to be under a rock at this point to not know the importance of the essential fatty acids for healthy brain and eye function -that is so well publicized that they even promote it on the EFA enriched infant formula which was approved by the FDA based on such studies. I live in Florida now and am fully understanding that main street MD may or may not be knowledgeable about all aspects of nutrition- no less all we know in this group after a decade with thousands of members which is priceless and proven information.. but I seek those professionals that are: 1. Respected in the community by other doctors as well as patients 2. NOT alarmists -I'm hyper enough, I like common sense MDs. 3. Open minded to out of the box and new ideas and still learning. 4. Out of the box him or herself! What we have today is the ability to dig ourselves more than our parents and grandparents had. They had medical reference books which did not contain mice research...that was the stuff Lorenzo's Oil was made from- and back then they had to find that study at a library after extensive searching for help. By the way...the one medical doctor that presented at our First Apraxia Conference http://www.cherab.org/news/scientific.html http://www.cherabfoundation.org/2001/cherab-foundations-first-apraxia-conference\ / was the distinguished Dr. Hugo Moser (who sadly passed away since our conference) http://www.kennedykrieger.org/kki_staff.jsp?pid=1841 who is the doctor featured in the movie of the same name, and who a decade later validated Lorenzo's Oil. I'll never forget Dr. Moser POUNDING her fist on a podium at our conference after hearing about all the surges in all the children - and not just parental anecdotal, but professional anecdotal and shouting " RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY! DO NOT WAIT! RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY! " (we had hundreds of reports but the one doctor only wanted " medical doctors " not SLPs and teachers...but when the professional anecdotal was validated mainly the only professionals to personally witness the dramatic changes were the SLPs and teachers who saw the child almost every day!) Perhaps that is because he led the trials for Lorenzo's Oil after being portrayed not in the best light in the movie (as you can see here) And notice how these parents are attacked by a support group they used to belong to...and again this oil which was attacked ended up being validated. Imagine if Lorenzo's parents were not working with an incredible medical doctor -Dr. Hugo Moser? Imagine. Perhaps Dr. Moser in his infinite wisdom somehow knew that over a decade later we would NOT have research done to validate fish oils for this population of speech and/or language impaired individuals and that somewhere in the USA...ten years later... a mom would go to her pediatrician who would advise her to give her child a half a Flintstone vitamin (? was that thinking why get too healthy with a whole Flintstone vitamin?!) instead of essential fatty acids. Essential nutrients can not be made by the body but are needed daily so they need to be consumed. This includes essential fatty acids (such as the fish oils) and essential amino acids and nutrients. It would be overwhelming to try to explain all this group has learned over the past decade and at one point long ago I too may have taken the advice of a pediatrician who told me to give my child a half a Flintstone vitamin so that we don't clog the sewer system with too many Flintstone vitamins (I'd have to find the research but much of those vitamins are flushed down the toilet unabsorbed by the body. I read 90% but would want to find the actual study) Essential fatty acids are not vitamins -but I still would not advise the Flintstone when we now it appears learned from this group due to NV that food sources are more easily digestible and utilized. So to make this parent friendly examine Beechnut http://www.beechnut.com/leading-edge%20nutrition/studyShowsBigBenefits.asp EFA enriched infant formula http://similac.com/baby-formula/similac-advance and perhaps if you want to read more scientific information http://efaeducation.nih.gov/ Here is our " fish oils 101 " from our http://www.apraxia.org fb site http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=115029735601 & topic=7401 And here is why essential amino acids and nutrients from whole food sources is so important based on the science http://pursuitofresearch.org/science.html There are a number of good brands- ProEFA, EyeQ, Coromega for fish oils-but you'll find all of that in the above links. Again I'd say I'd personally find another pediatrician, chuck the Flintstone vitamin and just keep the cartoons (love the Flintstones) -but that's me. =====
Guest guest
Do the research!!! Read and see how much DHA and EPA are in baby formula.... that will answer your questions. And if you choose to give something like Nordic, you are not having to worry about toxins like mercury. Guest guest
The product my SLP recommended is not actually fish oil, it is made from algea, but supposedly has all the same nutrients. has anyone tried that? Vicki ________________________________ From: D. Guest guest
I give my 2 year old 2 ProEFA, 1 ProEPA, and one heaping scoop of Nutriiveda a day. Both his neurologist and his pediatrician have approved this....they both told me that they didn't think they would help, but that it wouldn't hurt...well, it hasn't hurt and they help A LOT!!!!! -Brittany
Guest guest
wow...so much could be said about that statement your pediatrician made. She wants you to NOT give him something healthy like fish oils or NV, but yes give him something that in my opinion is not that healthy at all. (contains dyes and aspertame). Nordic naturals are tested for purity and is the brand most here use. There is a ton of info in the archives, but the combo most use is 2 gelcaps complete 3-6-9 and 1 gelcap EPA. its water soluable, so what isn't needed by the body gets expelled. I find if I go to the doctors office armed with information beforehand I get less of the eye-roll reaction. I can tell you that if I felt that my doctor was being closed minded, I'd go somewhere else. The fish oils are something that most definately helped my son with speech and I don't care which doctor tells me otherwise...i know the truth of was I saw. My doctor really is on board now and it's been years since he gave me the old " well...it wouldn't hurt " speech! Do your research on fish oils as well as flintstone vitamin ingredients and you'll be able to see which is the better choice. sandy ________________________________ From: lisam1010 <lisam1010@...> Sent: Thu, November 4, 2010 3:30:26 PM Subject: [ ] Supplements for my 2 year son  After reading the book " Late Talker " , I asked my pediatrician about giving my son supplements at his well visit, to help him with delays in gross motor and speech. Guest guest
Doesn't even Dr. Sears recommend fish oils? If I remember, he believes in them and now has them on his website.
