Guest guest
He is 2. I don't know how these group sessions are going to go I don't want to be completely negative about them but I am not happy. The therapist implied that it was a funding issue. I told her I was not happy at all about this decision and that I wanted more than 1 session a week. All I got was an " I'm sorry " , that's it. We recently had to quit seeing our private therapist because reduced income (feed the kids or speech therapy?) I am really upset about this because our son made ALL of his progress with her. If anyone needs a good private therapist in Metro Detroit email me privately, she is WONDERFUL! Here in NY, Early Intervention is run thru the State, not the school district. We dont transition to the school till Preschool at 3yrs old. My 12 yo son had Speech thru EI for 2x 30 minute sessions. Once he transitioned to the school district, I brought him 3x a week for 30 minute sessions. Once the therapist saw how well he was able to participate for 30 min, she suggested we make his session 2x 45minutes. I had my daughter at teh time, she was 3-6mos old while I was transporting him 3x a week to Speech. We tried it and it was fine. He was discharged a few months later. My point is that there is no way he would have made it for an hour-long session at 3yo and no one in Early Intervention would even try to do that. We were lucky we made it thru 30min sessions some days!! I'm just wondering how old your son is because if he's less than 3yo an Individual session would never get anything accomplished, nevermind a Group session! Group sessions work better for school age kids, starting at 5yo/K and above and NOT prek and forget the 0-3 kids. Dont know how an SLP could possibly have realistic expectations about making a change like that!! The way I needed to request an increase in sessions at the 0-3 EI level was to talk to my EI Service Coordinator. They'd arrange a new SLP Evaluation and that would determine if she qualified for an increase in sessions. Do you have a Service Coordinator for 0-3? Guest guest
Here in Utah, they will come to my home to provide 1-on-1 therapy until he turns 3--then he goes to the preschool or therapy at the school...I am looking for a great private therapist here. I know he needs more frequent therapy. On Sun, Sep 19, 2010 at 10:38 AM, janel sparks <janel138@...> wrote: > > > He is 2. Guest guest
Janel, You can always request more services. As you know, one time a week is not enough for a child with apraxia. And group therapy for kids under 3??? What??? I agree with you; it's not enough. Ask for an IFSP meeting to request more services. Here is more info: http://www.asha.org/public/speech/disorders/childhoodapraxia.htm for more details. Warmest wishes, Barbara , M.S., CCC-SLP www.helpmespeak.com 410-442-9791 Ask me about NutriiVeda! Guest guest
Hi there, I was just reading your messages and saw that you (Melinda???) are in Utah...I would love to chat..I'm in Utah as well. I was told the same. 1x/week of ST in a group setting. That was last year, when I was pretty new to all of this. Back in March though, we had his IEP and by then I was participating in this group and had read many of the stories of parents that fought to get their kids more therapy through the early intervention...so we went prepared to the meeting and we were able to get 2x/week and add OT. I'm still not " happy " as he needs a lot more than that, but I talked to the special ed teacher and many other SLP and they always comment on how " good " we are for advocating for him because it's really hard to get even that, here in UT at least. I just laugh at these type of comments because I'm just to the point of requesting another IEP meeting to try to increase his services once again (and you can request it...). Basically I told at the meeting that by law my son should be provided with the appropriate therapy he needs..and for that, I shouldn't have to spend a penny for it. I still do as I take him to a private SLP that is trained on prompt, but the point is that he's entitled to receive the appropriate therapy and they need to find the funds for it...anyway, u just have to fight it. There's a few messages from this group that are pretty good on giving you the resources to start digging into all of this...I have some saved, I can email them to u! Have you read the late talker book? London 801-451-5461 From: malinda.joseph@...
