Guest guest
I have a question about evaluations....for those of you that have had many, do they ever ask you if you took your child off of any medications, etc. that they were on? What do you say (that is, if you DID take your child off of NV/fish oils)????? Thanks! In a message dated 9/22/2010 4:46:44 P.M. I hope that you will be able to try the NV with your son. You were interested in how our daughter has progressed from 5 yrs. to now. We repeated kindergarten so that she would have an extra year to work on her speech. At 5, she was only able to put a couple of words together at a time. She didn't have trouble doing the work for kindergarten, but couldn't really talk. At 6 yrs., she repeated kindergarten at a private school. When she entered the 1st grade she was taking the fish oil and her speech improved, but her syntax was very poor and her sentences very short. As she learned to read, she seemed to concentrate so hard on the words trying to pronounce them, it appeared she did not comprehend what she was reading. I believe all of this affected her focus. Since she was struggling to express herself, it made everything difficult for her. We would go over and over the work that she learned in class trying to s tay up. Amazingly, she made all A's but at the end of the 3rd grade, we were concerned because so much more is required of the kids. They were now having to write little stories and answer more difficult questions. It is at this time, we tried the NV. She is now in the 4th grade. Almost immediately, her syntax became very good, her sentences became more complex, and she just finished writing a research paper for science. To us, it is quite a blessing. I believe for this to have happened, it has to be the NV because she is 10 yrs old, not a real young child going through developmental stages. I mentioned to my husband last night, that before starting the NV, she could not get her thoughts together to write a sentence and when she spoke, her sentence structure was really poor. Now, she seems to be caught up. As I mentioned in another e-mail, she quit wetting the bed, and can now ride her bike without training wheels! Please forgive me for rambling so much. I hope that this mi ght be encouraging to you. If I can help in anyway, please just let me know. Guest guest
As an SLP, at evaluations and during ongoing sessions, I do ask what medicines, supplements, etc. a child is on currently and has been on recently. I look at the picture of the whole child, so to me, it's important to share which items a child is on or not. And yes, why he/she is on or off meds etc. is important info too. I would share that you want the examiner (SLP, etc) to get a true picture of your child's skills without any supplements and that you will be resuming them on __ date. In that way, they will be able to see the true skills and then know when they are resumed and what effect it has on the child. Then if you choose to " blind " the school, etc when you resume Fish Oils or NV, check in with them to see if they notice a difference after a few weeks. If so, then tell them what the child is now taking. Just my 2 cents.. A client's parent told me recently that I am much more holistic than any of the other providers seeing her child. Yes, I am holistic and want to look at the whole child. I am surprised that other therapists do NOT look at the whole child. How can you provide therapy and not take other factors (diet, stools, constipation, etc.) into account?
