Depends on your mood, right? Turns out dinner isn’t just what’s in the fridge, it's science. Researchers from England conducted a study that found a link between bad moods and poor diet. Specifically, fatty, fried foods contribute to irritability and even depression. Both fried and fatty foods deprive the brain of essential nutrients that help regulate activity, including mood control. " A diet that’s not complete with all nutrients does contribute, such as a diet low in vitamin D can contribute to bouts of depression, " said dietician Jessilyn O’Bannon. But the real question the study sought to answer was if depressed people are more inclined to eat a certain way. For years, dieticians and doctors have been convinced there was a link between food selection and mood. But finding such a link is hard because serotonin levels -- the neurotransmitter that controls mood -- are affected by many sources, in addition to diet. The order of effects is also unclear. Scientists can gauge food consumption and moods but can’t tell which is first -- the cause and effect of the entire deal. Does depression lead to poor eating or does poor eating lead to depression? Whatever the cause and whatever the effect, scientists say your best bet is a diet high in whole grains, nuts and vitamin D. Those feed both your body and brain in the best ways. And don’t forget the vegetables.
