When you are trying to make a substantial societal change, engaging a diverse group of people is imperative. Too often, people with developmental disabilities are under-represented because they do not have close ties to lawmakers, business leaders, media and other key decision makers Slowly, but surely, that is changing. Through programs such as the Just Say Something campaign, with its Community Conversation series, people with disabilities are making their voices heard and making real connections with people in power throughout the state. Nowhere was this more evident than at the Community Conversation held May 24 in Flemington. Nearly 50 participants, including Assemblyman (R-Hunterdon) came out to participate in Hunterdon County's first-ever Community Conversation. State and local lawmakers shared coffee and casual conversation with local residents with developmental disabilities, care providers and other supporters. The event created a strong dialogue about issues affecting people with developmental disabilities. Individuals in positions of leadership had an opportunity to interact with individuals with developmental disabilities and see them as fully engaged citizens. They also had the opportunity to address the issues and concerns of people whose lives are affected by the decisions they make, locally and statewide. One of those major issues is inclusion. The Council is actively working to introduce people with developmental disabilities to their communities. The only way they are going to be fully engaged is if they are recognized as full participants. It is our hope that Community Conversations spread to all parts of New Jersey. Opening the doors of dialogue is the first critical step toward any substantial change. - Alison Lozano, Ph.D. Executive Director, NJCDD Right-click here to download pictures. This month, a blogger by the name of " Valli " starts us off with a post about a deli owner in her town and his understanding as she attempts to teach her son how to count out change: " When I approached the owner of a deli in my town about the fact that I'd be bringing in my son to teach him about money and buying things, he strongly encouraged me to bring him as often as possible. He told me that he would be happy to work with my son in counting out his change. It really touched my heart that this man was supporting me in my efforts to teach a life skill and independence to my child. " Blogger " Steinbruck " posted a link to a great commercial by the group Think Beyond the Label with the theme " Labels get in the way, disabilities rarely do. " <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?ccs01var/6f738e0115/81d525224f/4d940c6dd8/v=iLpwWUK m6KA> Click here to check it out. Blogger " " expressed her frustration at drug companies she believes are putting profit ahead of safety: " I am appalled at the impact big pharma and big medicine has on the policies that affect us all. In the first place, their drugs are approved in a very negligent manner and then they push those drugs and get our government authorities to pimp for them. It is time to get more balance in what is going on with drugs/vaccines. etc. we need to ask more questions of the secret meetings that drug makers have with our government officials. They are all secret. the public is always KEPT OUT. It leads to corruption and graft and stealing public tax dollars for ineffective harmful drugs. " Finally, blogger " Hostafarian " wonders why New Jersey isn't moving to eliminate the words " retard " and " retarded " from state laws: " Hey - did anyone notice that a new piece of legislation in Washington is getting some attention??? ROSA's LAW would eliminate words like 'retard' and 'retarded' from federal laws! Why don't we have a legislative effort here in New Jersey to do the same thing? I see there is the " R Word " campaign, but what about getting a bill introduced? " Right-click here to download pictures. Hymes - Standing Up to Mc's Instead of quietly enjoying a hamburger from the Mc's restaurant on West 63rd Street in Bayonne on a warm May afternoon, Korall Hymes had to listen to store employees ridicule her brother, who has autism. Korall went to Mc's with her mother, Delrhi, and brother Jaylen, 14. Jaylen started crying and screaming because of the heat and the long wait for so-called fast food. Eager to calm her son down, Korall left the car and walked inside to see if she could order the food quicker at the counter. When she arrived inside, it was quickly apparent why the food wasn't coming. She found store employees passing around a headset and laughing at her brother. His wails from the car, prompted by hunger and heat, were fodder for the employees' amusement. " Hey, listen to this [expletive] retard, " one of the employees said, according to Korall. " He does that stupid [expletive] every time they come here. " When Korall returned to the car, she was visibly shaken, according to Delrhi. She told her mother what happened and her mother went inside and spoke to the manager, who she claims was one of the employees mocking her son's disability. Delrhi also contacted the Mc's corporate office and, at press time, was still waiting for a call back. This was not the family's first incident at that Mc's. In 2007, store employees began mocking Jaylen when he got upset inside the restaurant. The manager was conciliatory that time, offering a sincere apology and tickets for a free meal. The family continued to frequent the restaurant. Since this is the second time store employees have acted inappropriately, Delrhi is demanding that Mc's take the issue more seriously. " I plan on contacting the Office of Civil Rights, not only on my son's behalf, but on behalf of all people with disabilities, because this is not acceptable, " Delrhi said. " I'm demanding hiring practices include sensitivity training for employees and the actual hiring of people with disabilities. " Jaylen sometimes gets upset when he goes out. He prefers to know his exact schedule before he leaves home and would rather be playing on the computer. But his family has never had a problem anywhere other than that particular Mc's, according to Delrhi. Delrhi has been an advocate for people with developmental disabilities for about seven years. She has completed the Partners in Policymaking course and helps new parents by answering their questions, informing them of available services and providing them with support. She started a Facebook group for the families she helps last year and says it has been a great success. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?ccs01var/6f738e0115/81d525224f/49580f1fbc> E-newsletter development by CCS .
