TryCAN Family Night

A gathering for parents of

children with special needs

Bring the entire family! While the parents meet to learn about

some new programs and find out about getting involved in

TryCAN and our parents' organization, the children and their

siblings will play in the gym. Trained Peer Mentors and

volunteers will assist as the kids enjoy games and activities led

by " Mr. Fun. " Following the presentations, the families will gather

together for dessert and networking.

child for a bike evaluation (bike and helmet required)

* Learn more about the TryCAN organization and how you can

fabulous program from Children's Specialized Hospital

See the first " World Premiere " of our Social Skills Programs

Movies - Written, directed and starring our kids!

The communities of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit have

formed a collaboration called TryCAN. By offering these programs

through the collaboration, each community can host a program, field teams

and join forces to present a comprehensive program of recreation offerings

for children with special needs.

No residency requirements. We welcome all families

of special needs children in our area.

MUSIC WITH JAMMIN' JENN - This class will engage children in singing,

movement and instrument

exploration in a fun and lively setting. These activities will help to

increase body awareness and awareness of

others, increase attention and listening skills. They will also learn how to

take turns while developing an

appreciation of music.

Who: Children ages 4 - 9

Dates: Wednesdays, July 7 - July 28 (4 weeks)

Times: 12:30 - 1:00 PM or 1:00 - 1:30 PM

Fee: $60.00

READING RHYTHMS - The first goal of this class is to encourage a LOVE of

reading in young readers.

Children will receive reading exercises designed to capitalize and celebrate

their reading strengths to foster a

" can-do " reading attitude. Areas of reading weakness will be targeted with

games, music, and fun interactive

exercises. With peer mentor support and the removal of difficult independent

tasks such as writing, your

child will experience success in a fun environment. This class is designed

for any child who may struggle

with reading at a K-3 level. This includes children who need strengthening

of phonetic, word analysis skills,

and sentence structure. Children may benefit from this class if they

experience difficulty with decoding

words, retaining sight words, or comprehension and fluency.

We now offer a choice of one or two classes per week.

Who: Children ages 5+

Date: Mondays, June 28 - August 2 (No class 7/5) and/or Wednesdays, June 30

- July 28 (5 weeks)

Times 4:00 - 4:45 PM.

Fee: $120.00 each session

FUN FLAG FOOTBALL - Coach Mike Vernotico will be running a fun flag football

class for children with

special needs. Sessions will focus on basic football rules, running and

passing, defense vs. offense and

teamwork.

Dates: Sundays, July 11 - August 8 (5 weeks)

Who/Time: ____ Children ages 6 - 9 4:00 - 4:45 PM

READY, SET, BIKE! - This upcoming Fall, we plan to run a learn to ride a

bike class designed for children

ages 5+ who have had difficulty learning to ride a two-wheeler bike. Using a

step-by-step approach, your

child will learn skills to successfully ride a two-wheeler, focusing on bike

management, balance, coordination,

pedaling and stopping safety. Your child would need to bring his/her own

bike and helmet.

s, Occupational Therapist will teach the six week program.

Join us at our TryCAN Parent Night on June 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Summit

Community Center. will

provide a free bike riding screening for your child in preparation for the

Fall class.

Summer Inclusion Playground Program in Westfield

The Westfield Recreation Department is in its seventh year of offering its

Summer Inclusion Playground

Program. This program allows children with special needs to enjoy a

successful playground experience in an

inclusive setting. In past years, parents have taken advantage of this

opportunity to provide their children with

recreation fun and socialization. This year, Westfield Recreation has

invited the families from TryCAN and

the entire region to become a part of this program. Your child is welcome to

join any part of the day. The

afternoon session (1:00 - 3:45 PM) in the past has been especially

convenient for children who have extended

school year requirements or other commitments in the morning.

Who: Children entering 1st - 6th grade in September

Where: lin School Playground, 700 Prospect Street, Westfield

When: Monday - Friday, June 28 - August 5

Time: Morning Session 9:00 - 11:45 AM and Afternoon Session 1:00 - 3:45 PM

Cost: $45.00

Registration begins on June 1, 2010. Register in person at the Westfield

Recreation, 425 E. Broad Street,

Westfield, NJ.
