But my neighbour never gets colds? Why is this? A: Resistance to infections has everything to do with the strength of your immune system. And what determines this? Adequate nutrition is number one: enough protein; adequate vitamins A, C, E, folic acid, and B-complex; adequate minerals, such as zinc, iron and selenium; and sufficient essential fatty acids (like the omega-3 oils found in fatty fish). A whole-foods diet is key, and I often advise a potent multivitamin-mineral supplement formulated for your age and gender. Minimizing sugar will also help bolster your white cells' ability to fight disease-causing germs. Then there are these common-sense measures that can boost immune function: adequate sleep and exercise, avoiding excessive stress, having enough fun, affection, and intimacy, and being a member of a close community or other group that provides emotional support. Several health conditions that can " drain " your immune system include food allergy/sensitivity, candida/yeast, a sluggish thyroid and weakened adrenals. If you suspect one of these could be the problem, see a health professional familiar with these conditions. At the first signs of a cold you could also try one or more of these measures: Zinc lozenges, extra vitamin C and echinacea tincture or capsules. Also cut down on calories (even going on a liquid diet for a few days), relax and sleep as much as possible, stay warm and temporarily stop exercising. Guest guest
I Haven't had a cold since practically the beginning of CRON (and this is with my husband sometimes bringing one home and then coughing into my face unknowingly during the night). Vit C and herbs never used to work for me. What I had found pre-CRON as the best cold aborter is a few roasted (in the microwave) garlic cloves. Roast lightly for 30-45 seconds or until just palatable. Only works if you feel the cold coming on. Once it has taken hold, it's usually too late. on 8/30/2002 10:40 AM, Dave Noel at davenoel@... wrote: As for > the colds, I highly recommend trying large doses of Vitamin C combined with > echinacea when you feel a cold coming on (efficacy for echinacea is short, > like two weeks so you can't just stay on it), but I haven't been sick this > century yet and I swear this stuff works!
