Guest guest
Gregg. what is an appropriate amount of gla to take, and is there a good source for those over age 65 other than capsules (which are readily available)? Thanks, Ed S. Kruger MC, Coetzer H, de Winter R, Gericke G, van Papendorp DH. Department of Physiology, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Recent animal work suggests that gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) enhance calcium absorption, reduce excretion and increase calcium deposition in bone. A pilot study was set up to test the interactions between calcium and GLA + EPA in humans.

Hi Ed, Assuming you are getting 6 - 8 g of LA (Omega 6) a day, there should be little need for GLA. As to the EPA, I have recently upped my usage to 4 standard 1 g capsules a day, 2 just before lunch and 2 just before dinner. The OmegaBrite capsules are a good option as ther contain as much EPA as 2 standard fish oil capsules with very little DHA and they are a much smaller capsule. http://www.omegabrite.com/ I would suggest 1 tablespoon of ground flax with breakfast, 1 OmegaBrite or 2 standard just before lunch & 1 OmegaBrite or 2 standard just before dinner. The flax also gives you heaps of lignans, which convert into phytoestrogens and also help to protect against bone loss. Greg
Guest guest
Thank you Greg, we're using the equivalent of 4 fish oil caps (Life Extension's caps) for epa. We also get dha. I know there are now some questions about dha intake but I'll not address that 'til my current supply of caps runs out! We also eat modest amounts of salmon a couple of times a week. Colleen eats more salmon that I, and gets more Omega 6. She doesn't measure, but I tend to get 5 or 6 grams of sat fat out of 18 to 35 grams. The heavy days are "salmon" days. She uses some canola oil, as well. She eats more fat than I do, most of it in the form of Canola. I use a couple of Tablespoons of flaxseed (ground in small batches and frozen til use) in the am. This is a large part of my fat for the day. I had some triglyceride and blood pressure problems. The Triglycerides problem is gone, and the bp problem is greatly ameliorated. While the overall diet, before Omega 3, helped...taking triglycerides down to the 300's, reading The Omega Plan and exchanging posts with Jo moved me to using some salmon (I was using only eggwhites and skim milk products to that point). It was after that that the bp showed the largest improvement. Triglycerides are now completely normal. Total Cholesterol came up a little, but I also cut back on lipitor at the same time. Ratio tc/hdl degraded from 2.9 to 3.2 at the same time. Still pretty good. Beginning to have great difficulty staying with overall program began at that same point. I believe the problem was psychologica. Opening the "door" to some fish seemed to bring a lot of unwelcome company with it in terms of return to old habits. It's better now, but I have to watch myself (mindfulness, mindfulness...) and correct my thoughts by letting go those temptations before they become actions. Thanks again, ed Greg wrote: ----- Original Message ----- From: sully@...
