Guest guest
Todd- i have high LDL's due mainly to heredity and overall cholesterol too. Will watching GI's of my food help? I'm currently trying to devise a plan to lower it. what else are you doing(besides CRing) to address the problem? niacin? garlic? -Becky
Guest guest
Hi Becky, GI works best for VLDC (Very Low Density Choesteral) and Tryglycerides...both have implications for heart problems. However, LDL is best addressed by diet. I also eat garlic regularly (3-6 cloves per day)...mainly because I love it but also for my heart. I have just recently started with niacin (really an overall B complex). Another important factor for LCL is exercise which since CR I have been doing regularly and lately with increasing intensity. Of course, stop smoking if you do as this is a major contributor too. One main change I made is the quality of my protein sources since being on CR. For breakfast I do fat free yogurt and whey protein (chocolate flavor) with berrys (strawberries and blueberries)...yummy! (I also add a couple of crushed almonds to the top for crunch and good fat). I switched 95% of my egg consumption to only egg whites which took some creativity in the kitchen to keep the flavor good. I subsituted soy (tofu) or other vegtable protiens (mushrooms or beans) for at least one more of my meals and keep the remaining meal to Salmon, or other fish and occasionally lean chicken. On rare occasion, I'll treat myself to some lean red meat. (usually prepared in a very low fat way). I also choose fat free foods (cheese, condiments, salad dressings) and that way if I want the fat I can add it back with good fat (mono's and omega 3s) and not with any bad fats. Fortunately for me, my numbers look pretty good now and I expect continual improvement (it can take many months for these programs to reduce your levels to the maximum amount) so I now I am not looking at statins....but that may be an option for you if diet, exercise and CR does not do the trick. Guest guest
thanks for your comments, i have another blood test in november to see how my cholesterol is. if it is not down, my doc wants me to go on medication to lower it. i don't want to do that for MANY reasons. so hopefully through a stringent diet and upping my exercise regimn, i can get it down(my LDL is the worrisome one for me) i'll keep you all posted, thanks -Becky

The last is very important and no amount of glucose lowering tricks will help to store glucose (except as fat) when the glycogen stores are full. The liver normally holds about 150 g and the muscles from 300 to 600 g. Muscel is the main storage for glycogen and this is one reason why exerise will enhance glucose control. PS: Eating fat will rasult in fat being burnt for fuel and reduce the emptying of the glycogen stores and thus make good glucose control hard. Check your carb foods for those with GI's over 60 and cut them way down if not eliminate them. Try to keep total carbs below 1,200 cals and exercise to increase glucose storage in your muscles. Guest guest
Very interesting Greg, considering i'm a recovering carb addict. my choleseterol test results where a total wake-up call for me. i haven't had a darn cookie since. they were the inspiration i needed to get my act together and finally forgo the processed junk i've let remain w/me on my CRish diet(i'm still somewhat of a newbie) i will revisit the various GI chart postings that have been throw around here over the past couple of months. thanks again. -Becky
Guest guest
Could you just review again your monitoring method - timing, what to look for, etc.? I'm going to get a monitor for myself and so am very interested in the best approach. Thanks. nancy (P.S. I'm basically a lurker and have been since the inception of this group)
