Hi Dana,

Do you follow Dr. Walford's dietary advise?

Have you have your Cortisol tested?

Could you share a bit more about your diet?

Do I agree that Osteo is to be avoided at all costs...........

Mmm...Good question. Actually, I probably do and probably don't.

Not much of an answer I know. I have learned much from all kinds of

sources, Dr. Walford, my nutritionist and other books. I have low

blood sugar, so my diet is very much dictated by what my body can and

cannot tolerate. I have to eat protein based meals and snacks to

keep my blood sugar as stable as possible. I have to keep bread,

cereals and other grains to a minimum (I believe Dr. Walford follows

a higher carb diet than I can tolerate, that's where I deviate from

his diet). Hypoglycemics typically don't tolerate wheat too well

While I do eat wheat, I make sure not to eat it in the morning or by

itself. My diet with regards to hypoglycemia is far more important

to me than CR because not tending to it can make my life and others

around me miserable. On that same note, CRing and eating for

hypoglycemia aren't that far removed and, for that matter, can

complement each other.

Here's a rundown on my diet.

Calories: 2000Kcal (when I was on CR I averaged ~1800Kcal)

Carbs: 40-50%

Fat: 25-30% I strive for 50% mono 25% poly <25% sat

Protein: 20-25%

Typical day

Breakfast: (I absolutely never deviate from this)

1 egg fried with PAM olive oil

1 egg white fried

soy beans or red pepper or cherry tomatoes

1c soy milk or 1c orange juice

1-2c tea

ProGreens green drink mixed with the juice or soy milk

Multivitamin, 1000mg C, 400IU E, 25,000IU Beta Carotene, 1000mg

Salmon oil, garlic, 50mg Selenium, 1000mg Calcium, 30mg zinc

Snack:

fruit salad: 1 apple, .5 avocado, 3 dates, sprinkle lime juice

Lunch1:

6oz tuna

1-2 raw carrots

crackers

water

Lunch2:

peanut butter and jelly sandwich with whole wheat bread

banana

water or milk

Snack:

10-20 raw unblanched almonds

1 pint raspberries

dinner:

4c green salad no dressing (romaine lettuce, fresh mint, fresh basil,

orange, tomato)

4-5oz salmon, 4oz trout, or 4-6oz chicken breast

choy sum or broccoli

1c milk

snack:

yogurt with banana

My exercise:

3 days a week run 3-5miles

2 days a week combo class of 30min aerobics and 30min stationary bike

3 days a week lift weights (however, have been doing this lightly

lately or skipping days altogether)

Mine bottomed out at a bone mineral density of 0.675 in the lumbar spine and 0.654 g/cm2 in the hip (-4.7 and -3.2 standard deviations < peak). Bisphosphonates help and have are well tolerated.

To go on CR, there is only so much excess fat to lose. Skeletal muscle and liver are soon greatly decreased. IMHO, muscle in these days of automation and machinery is necessary only for recreational benefits and safety; this requirement is met under CRON. Again IMHO, if you want longer healthier life, you have to forgo wedding feast binges, the average appearance on physical normalcy, reduced average sex and thyroid hormone levels + the functions they control and some athletic abilities. But what is lost is returned in a very bountiful harvest in the middle and golden years. There are also many advantages in the early years.

PS: IMHO, it is a disservice to this club if personal disparaging remarks are made about others. Private communications may be a preferred venue for personal remarks. I quote:

I spoke to Al offlist about the " disparaging remarks " since I hadn't noticed

any; he was mistakenly referring to the main list and not the support list.

As for one or two wedding feast binges a year, I disagree with Al and feel

they're probably harmless if you practise CR the vast majority of the time.

Even Walford admits he occasionally goes off his diet (I believe ice cream

is his weakness, so you're in good company); and he says that an

occasional binge is probably harmless.
