Guest guest
Hi Carla, I think I ordered signing time DVD's on amazon.com. But you can also order them at http://www.signingtime.com/ Baby babble: It took a while before my son started imitating the mouth movements. What helped is that we always watched the " baby babble dvd " together and I imitated and produced the sounds, so afterwards he started doing that and looking at me. He didn't do it always, but often. At the same time he had teh same sounds in his aba program as well. Guest guest
Hi. My name is and we have an almost 5 year old that, through his disabilities, has taught me about 100 years worth of knowledge in 5 years!? I'm the one that put the post up about dyspraxia/hypotonia/adhd...etc... Anyhow, for approximately 6 months now, we've been doing the talk tools protocol with him....at home..at school..It consists of bite blocks and a whistle hierarchy.? I really think that it is helping him immensely to give him more awareness and strength in his mouth and jaw area.?? There are still some letters that he cannot say, and some that he has a hard time with...but, we are making boatloads of progress!? Also, check into the icing protocol.? It's excellent for awareness on the cheeks, chin, mouth, and tongue.? If you're interested in talking more, email me...but, I'll tell you that between these two programs...in addition to his ST 5x/week we are really making progress. ('s proud Mom) [ ] Cool Gizmo's or Mouth Exercisers??????? Can anyone share any neat " tools " or toys, etc.. that worked particularly well with their child? Any great videos? Also, any mouth and tongue exercises? My son turned 3 at the end of January and despite 3 days a week of private speech therapy (one hour each) and a Verbal Behavior ABA program, he still is nonverbal. We are getting desperate, absolutley desperate to hear our son speak. We will not accept defeat. He's doing the Listening Program right now and he's on a restriced GFCF, yeast free diet and takes MANY supplements. We've also done 2 rounds of chelation (DMSA suppositories). He goes to a wonderful private preschool 2 days a week which he loves and a PPCD (ISD program) 3 days a week which is worthless! I'll take ANY suggestions and they are so appreciated. Guest guest
, all great new ideas! Thank you! I do want to hear more about the " icing protocol " . Bite Blocks? We have a hierarchy horn as well as many whistles. Don't have a protocol though. Where would I find the Talk Tools Protocol? Thank you SOOOOOOOOO much! Guest guest
Check out www.talktools.com.? We are using the whistles hierarchy.? (It's a pack of about a dozen or so whistles that you use with your child as much as possible (1-2x/day)?and also the bite blocks to help with jaw strengthening and awareness.? Also, the icing protocol was suggested by my son's swallowing specialist.? It is amazing how long the " feeling " lasts...try it on yourself...you'll be amazed!!!? You rub the ice 3 times and then dab the spot dry.? First, from the right upper cheekbone down towards the corner of the mouth..three times.?dab dab dab dry...?Then, the same on the left side.? dab dab dab dry ... Then, kind of like making a moustache...right side...from the middle of the moustache out .. three times .. then, dab dab dab dry ... then, the same on the left side ... then, dab dab dab dry ... then, under the bottom lip on the right side .. (just like the moustache, but under the bottom lip instead) then dab dab dab dry ... left side the same way ... then dab dab dab dry .. then, without choking him/her have him/her open mouth and do three times on the tongue.?? You will be shocked as to how long this " awareness " lasts.? I was shocked when she gave my son the paper towel the first time around and wiped the exact spot!!!? This protocol is done at the same time as the bite blocks and whistles.? We call it is mouth exercises...and it's really helping him. To answer your Y question.? He is getting much much better with it.? He can now say Yes..most of the time...? The word kayak?is a tough one.? He tends to stick his tongue out on the Y in that word..but, he's getting much much better with it. One day at a time. I hope that helps. ? [ ] Re: Cool Gizmo's or Mouth Exercisers??????? Guest guest
- not sure if you are talking to me , but I'll answer anyway! I have purchased a few things from talktools.net of which have been the horns and such that are included in teh whistles hierarchy.. I bought a Hierarchal Horn (or something like that) in which it will make a noise if you blow in or out - to try and teach her how to blow. Her problem with it so far, that we are working on at home and with her therapist - is that she stabilizes with her teeth instead of her lips, so we are having to pull it forward out of her teeth and help her close her lips to blow.. She does AWESOME when she holds it with her teeth - which is a big milestone in itself (so the therapist tells me!) I have not seen the bite blocks though... The stuff with the ice - what does that do??? I have never tried that, I will have to mention it to her ST too - and see if that is something she will do at therapy when she goes, and then have her show our nanny so we can do it at home... I kind of get the idea but don't understand what it is supposed to help with (maybe I'm just slow!)... I have been trying to see if she ever licks her lips and she doesn't - my kid could walk around with crap all over her face for days and she would have no clue nor would she care!  Cristal gtzellner@... Guest guest
Hi there. When we do the whistles and bite blocks with , they are his " mouth exercises " .. we do not let him do them on his own .. he knows that.? We have to hold the whistle out to keep it out of his teeth too!? That in itself is a workout for him, because he has such a hard time using his lips and tongue like that...but, it's working! The ice is used for awareness...we call it " waking up his cheeks " ...at it, along with all the other oral motor things are really starting to work. The bite blocks are helping with strengthening, because he has such low tone throughout his whole body, and face and jaws .. and such poor awareness, that his chewing and swallowing have been quite a chore.? He stuffs his mouth because he is unaware that his mouth is full.? All of this is helping...but, it's such a ssssllllllooooooowwwwwww process!! Good luck!
