Guest guest
Jeanne and , at what age were your children found to have large tonsils and adenoids. My child is almost 3.4 years old and we haven’t had this diagnose yet but his speech is delayed and he’s about a year behind his peers. Ann [ ] swallowing disorder and enlarged tonsils <mailto: %40> Date: Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 8:50 AM Hi!? It's in NH. I'm writing about my 5 year old son.? He has many issues...global dyspraxia, hypotonia, dysphagia (aspiration on thin liquids), dysarthria, adhd, gerd, hiatal hernia, abnormal heartbeat, and sensory integration issues. On his recent videoflouroscopic swallow study it showed that he had enlarged tonsils.? We took him to a ear, nose, and throat specialist and found that his tonsils are HUGE!? They actually touch each other in the back of his throat!? ? They are coming out this Friday morning! Has anyone else been down this road?? If so, how much improvement have you seen?? I'm hoping that it will help his drooling and that we may not have to thicken all of his liquids.? Time will tell, I guess. Looking forward to hearing from anyone with similarities. Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Ann. My son is 5 and it was just discovered on his swallow study that he had in June! I cannot believe that it wasn't picked up on some physical, sick visit, or when he's had any one of his 5 endoscopies! Guest guest
Hi Ann.. Before we actually had the swallow study itself, his swallowing specialist came out and watched him while he ate all different types of foods/textures...and watched how he drank liquids. She was exceptional!! Then, she suggested the swallow study. We brought him in and he sat in a big chair and they put barium in all of the foods that he was going to eat and drink. Then, they actually x-ray him the entire time that he is eating and make a video of the whole thing. (To see it...it looks like a little skeleton eating and drinking food!) It's unbelievable! Then, his swallowing specialist takes that video and scrutinizes every single second of his swallow and makes up a report and gives suggestions for us to help him. Hope that helps. ! Guest guest
Hi Ann, My son was found to have enlarged tonsils and adenoids at a young age. It was discovered about age 2 or so. I was always told it was nothing to worry about. But every time we saw someone new they kept mentioning they were huge. My son kept getting sick with respiratory stuff. Diagnosed with asthma and sleep apnea also. Bad snorer also. Had real severe bouts of croup. Then the referral to the ent who recommened they be removed. I was told it might help or it might not. Turns out his tonsils were very badly infected they were taken out in pieces. Plus they were badly impacted he had to dig them out. The adenoids were so huge that the ent could not remove them all. He told me he had to leave some of the tissue behind. This was the best decision I have made for my son so far. No more sleep apnea its gone, snoring has decreased to only when sick or very tired but can barely hear it ( before it was so loud it kept me awake at night.), have only had 2 mild cases in the 2 years since of croup. and the asthma has improved drastically. Now my son is 10 and is doing great health wise so far.
