Our daughter is 21 months old (17 adjusted) and her speech therapist

through Early Intervention strongly suspects that she is apraxic. She

just did a formal evaluation at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and

while there is nothing conclusive yet that the therapist can determine,

she does show a lot of signs of CAS---no babbling to speak of (so to

speak!), very little use of consonants, only has one or two words that

have remained part of her vocabulary (she has pop-outs but loses them

as quickly as she acquires them), and very severe eating issues (she

cannot chew properly, has an overactive gag reflex that leads her to

vomit on any texture that is thicker than a stage 2 baby food).

Meanwhile,

she is learning sign language quite quickly and seems to have little

problem using gestures and other non-verbal communication forms.

Anyway, since she was so premature, had a brain bleed at birth, and

has so many signs of apraxia, we are trying to get her services now

rather than defer them until an official diagnosis. Traditional speech

therapy has yielded no progress in the 13 months we've been receiving

services. So we'd like to try to get her care that is more specialized

and geared towards apraxia.

I know that I've seen a bunch of folks who are from PA and NJ. If

anyone

has any resources---therapists, support groups, what have you---that

are located within a reasonable distance of Philly and wouldn't mind

recommending them to us, we'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

Abby

Yardley Speech & Language

215-428-2777 103 Eton Rd, Yardley, PA 19067

is the therapist there. She is trained in Prompt and very

good at getting the kids at ease with play and speech at the same

time. Her initial eval is free to allow you to decide if this is the

right thing for your child.

Abby,

In case you haven't discovered it yet, there is a support group that

meets monthly in Plymouth Meeting. Just go to this link and page

down to PA and you will find the contact information.
